Looking for a scenic destination on west coast of Italy - Lucca LIQL?

I don’t recall attempting this, but is it possible to file airways to Pisa and then advise you will be cancelling IFR once VMC on the approach and diverting VFR to Lucca?

Why should that not be possible?? It’s not forbidden to change plans in flight. Guys, it’s not Mauritania, it’s Italy.

The Pisa military ATC are quite helpful

BTW, Pisa ATC is rather known for being the least GA-friendly in Italy. Exceptions will confirm the rule.

Pictures from April this year (flying this route “the other way ’round”).

On downwind for Lucca airport.

Apron at Lucca.

Lucca city.

Aviosuperficie di Massarosa (where is it??)

Viareggio.

Proceeding further northbound at 1000 feet.

To Forte dei Marmi.

One gets used to local traditions – parallel streets, and the runways obliquely between them – brightly coloured hangars, blue-cyan here – I really ought to depart for Italy, one of these, you have given me a wonderful preparation. Now just give me some time off work, and some very decent flying weather – neither will be in the first couple of months.

That’s very useful – thanks.

This will be for tomorrow morning – VFR!!

Great photos, as always!

Peter, the Aviosuperficie di Massarosa is the one I’ve visited and mentioned in the PM. (The buildings in the left center of the photo are the hangars, and a friend’s house in Montramito is just barely off the photo )

Have a good flight and enjoy Lucca.

one flies Genoa, then SPEZI and then via Viareggio to Pisa. No clearance required for that below 3000.

Is that 2000ft?

The Genoa CAS is Class C above 2000ft, and its CTR goes down the SFC. I was just going to ask for a clearance from each bit, though when i last did that (on the east coast of Italy) they mostly refused so I flew well offshore, down the Adriatic.

An early bit of the sunset, FL100, over the sea

Sorry Peter, with that “3000 feet” I was referring to the lower limit of the Pisa CTR.
Genoa CTR has different lower limits, but then Genoa is very GA/VFR-friendly amd usually clears you whatever you ask for.

Just got back… some pics to follow later when I’ve had time to sort them out and convert the Pentax raw files, because the white balance on the DSLR somehow got set to Tungsten (hence the very blue pic above) The raw files will be fine.

Interesting wx:
