A map of EuroGA fly-ins 2013-2018

I visited Scalea LICK with a group in 2016, and found it to be a great airfield. Lovely, long, paved runway and brand new infrastructure still being finished. They had Avgas at the time, but I now see conflicting information about whether it is still available. The field is on the west coast about halfway between Salerno and Reggio Calabria.
Scalea LICK
There isn’t much info on the web site, but they responded quickly to emails at the time. There is also a bit of info on Facebook. Note that it also accepts float aircraft, if there are any of those in the forum.

It is a lovely flight west of Naples past Capri and then down along the Amalfi coast.

They organized a bus for our group transfer up to a fantastic hotel near Maratea (Pianeta Maratea). It is high up and uses a shuttle down to their private beach. Double rooms were €100 for what is really a 5* hotel.

There are a number of Avgas facilities on the way down Italy, so getting there should be no problem regardless of aircraft range.

Final comment, we were told that although they do not officially have customs, it can be organized if requested well in advance (that was in 2016). Of course, not needed for those arriving from Schengen.

I am very interested to meet you all,but i am VFR only,so that’s a limit.

Some countries are clearly missing so far, for example the entirety of the Benelux countries as well as Austria, all four of which would be rather easily accessible to most of us and hence should produce a solid turnout. But “easily reached” also seems to lower the turnout if Peter’s criteria are used.

I am not sure if many would come to Sicily. For most, it is as far as Greece, and that’s before you get into the tricky avgas situation in southern Italy. Also, “easy by airline” destinations produce low turnouts.

Venice (San Nicolo) was one of the suggestions for May 2019. Need to look up the film festival dates again… someone posted them here recently.

Slightly tangential but are there any initial thoughts on where a Spring ’19 fly-in may be to? Looks like there is a gap in the map near Sicily

LFMK Carcassonne also missing !

You missed Hertelendy Castle in Hungary. Only three planes. But to complete your map, it‘s worth to mention it.

The most attended ones were

  • in scenic locations
  • which are not easily reached by cheap airlines
  • where a local pilot organised the meet-up (and smoothed some possibly difficult airport issues / helped with the restaurant)

What also helps a lot is

  • a hard runway (grass reduces things by at least 1/3)
  • IFR airport
  • avgas and customs

From memory, the most attended were Mali Losinj (2014) which is just a great location, Carcassonne (2016) which also had a lot of organisation done mainly by Nestor, and Elba (Sep 2018) where we had help from African Eagle. These had 30 or so people.

Greece was just a one-off thing which I thought we should try once. We had about 15 there which was a lot more than I expected.

On the two “main” ones we do, May and September, we normally get 20+ people, and only really bad wx reduces this, to maybe 10.
