Cirrus Jet (combined thread)

Cirus Jet AD grounds the fleet.

The fix for the source of the fire is not difficult but how could the fire spread like that?

Interesting Incident report by the Swiss SUST about an incident which occurred in 2018.

https://www.sust.admin.ch/inhalte/AV-berichte/N474CG_SumB_e.pdf local copy

After landing, the crew noticed some smell or smoke, which intensified after the engine was shut down. Only after the Battery switch for Battery 1 was switched off did the smoke and smell disappear. The crew left the airplane subsequently with their passengers without informing either handling, airport authority or SUST about the incident. The airplane was positioned in the hangar, where about 1 hr later, an airport worker noticed a smell and 3 hours after parking it a gel like substance dripping from the nose gear. The airplane was consequently taken out of the hangar and the airport authority informed. 2 days later, the PIC ordered an inspection by the local avionics shop who found massive traces of heat and smoke in the forward avionics bay.

The subsequent inquiry found the air conditioning compressor controller burnt and massive traces of an electrical fire on the component. It appeared that a printed circuit bord had somehow disattached from the cooling body and traces of water found their way into the gap. Subsequent experiments with a similar working unit found these effects to be reproducable.

Cirrus subsequently published two Service Bulletins requiring regular testing of the compressor and checking of its installation.

As a side note, the inquiry found that the safety pin for the ballistic recovery system had not been set by the crew before leaving the airplane. It was replaced only 10 days after the incident. The inquiry also criticizes the crew for not performing prescribed checks (smoke removal, reinserting the safety pin) as well as for not informing airport authority and STSB about the incident immediately after it happened as required by article 17 VZV (applicable regulation in Swiss aviation law.)

In the face of the later destruction of a Cirrus Jet in the US following a defect in the entertainment system, the incident where a plane was parked inside a hangar after an obvious electrical fire puts an increased scrutiny on this incident, which occurred in 2018. The aircraft was practically new at the time.

Understatement of the day: “The PIC determined from the display on the system screen in the cockpit that battery 1 was still outputting 56 amps, although all the electrical consumers had already been switched off. This did not comply with his expectations.”

Lucky this happened shortly before landing.

read again… the compressor was heating and burning throughout the flight by the looks of it. They only noticed the smell after landing.

I have a feeling I know the guy in question and will try to ask a few questions eventually.

Unashamed marketing lingo but interesting all the same.

2nd hull loss by the looks of it, first accident during operation.

Take off gone wrong during a thunderstorm and windshears. 5 very lucky occupants.

Maybe refer to POH? wind sheer & thunderstorms

I am not sure how one should update their takeoff & landing distances and flying speeds in these variable weather conditions near the ground? say approaching with +20kts headwind and flaring with windsock doing in -15kts? or lined up with -10kts tailwind and rotating at Vr with windsock going +20kts?
