I had a fascinating evening in Rome chatting to Italian pilots doing the same thing – it sounds exceptionally bloody dangerous work. Low level, poor vis, disturbed air over the fire and flying something as aerodynamically slick as a Reliant towing a caravan!

I know several of these pilots and I they told me it is indeed bumpy flying.
And imagine having to put a fire out in a steep valley where you have to get in low. You point the plane towards the fire and hope the doors open. If not…
