Why the obsession with TBM's and PC12's, when a Mustang is much cheaper?

For hull value, I would be astonished to see anybody getting it for less than 1% per year

GA insurance is a unique market. Jets are priced differently..

No, it’s still a class rating but there is only one aircraft in the class. Therefore it’s the equivalent of a type rating. The rating is called “TBM SET” in the license. It enables you to fly any TBM ever built.

While it is astonishing that this obvious piece of regulatory abuse survived the “more GA friendly” policy of EASA, it is worth noting that the revalidation period for a class rating is two years, while for a type rating it would be one year.

Why is that regulatory abuse? What’s the downside of it being a class rating?

Cessna 206 Soloy conversion, P210 Silver Eagle conversion and Cessna Caravan are also a class – Cessna SET.

Regarding the 2 years — you have to do your IR checkride every year so it’s of little practical relevance if your main ride is a TBM. If it’s not, the two years are an advantage of a type rating.

Isn’t that obvious?

The legislation says, in effect, “there shall be single engine turbine class ratings”. The regulator (at the time, JAA) created the “class-of-a-single-type” abomination. If the original rulemakers had wanted that, they could have written it.

Some of that JAA and early EASA legacy has now been rolled back, so that technically it now is only a single class rating with “endorsements”, but the effect remains.

Compare that to the FAA to ASEL – Aircraft Single Engine Land. THAT is a PROPER class rating. Which is not just FAA, but ASEL/AMEL/AMEL/AMES are the standard class ratings according ICAO Annex 1.

Very interested thread.
In reference to the thread title: is a Citation Mustang really „much cheaper“? Considering buying and flying comparable second hand examples (age, hours, maintenance, options) of a Mustang and a PC12, which one wins concerning overall costs?

Comparing a Citation Mustang to a PC12 makes no sense at all. A PC12 is chosen when you have to haul a lot of kg and/or go to backcountry airstrips. The Mustang does neither of that but flies fast with the comfort of two engines.

I agree. They have such different missions that no-one would choose between them based on cost.

And @Romain, just saw this. Well, you will just have to wait to find out!
