Avidyne's TAS6xx ADS-B IN delays

Avidyne, which mis-sold their TAS 605 product over three years ago on the basis that they would be adding ADS-B In functionality, have now completely stopped even answering customer queries as to a likely date that it will be ready. They have been telling successive short term fibs for all that period, and it looks now likely that they have stopped development altogether and broken up the team. I believe that this is fairly typical of their corporate behaviour, so shouldn’t really come as a surprise.

I have just equipped an aircraft with Garmin TAS, which is fed by a GTX 345 for ADS-B In. Could I do the same piggy back from a GTX 345 into the TAS 605?

I think it is the other way around. The TAS feeds the GTX 345 and the GTX 345 feeds the MFD.

Would that work with the “not latest” TAS605? I can’t find the previous discussion right now among the many ADS-B threads (might be here) but to get the Avidyne ADS-B update one has to

  • update the TAS605 box to the current firmware (possible, for a few k)
  • load the ADS-B firmware (not possible because it doesn’t exist and according to Timothy probably never will)

What are the display options for the GTX345 traffic output which would actually work in this configuration? I am feeding the traffic data to a KMD550 (which has the ARINC429 card fitted) and to the two SN3500 EHSIs. One day the KMD550 will be replaced by a GTN750.

@wigglyamp might know something too; not sure if he is still here.

I would be concerned if Avidyne have stopped development on these products because it would inidicate a severe financial crisis there.

T., I’ve just had this done (with TAS600and GTX345) and NYCYankee is correct: the TAS600 feeds into the GTX which merges its traffic with ADSB-in.

This is then displayed on the GTNs and the iPad via Bluetooth.

That’s great, thank you. So I can relax in the knowledge that there is a solution.

@Peter, the only reason I suspect that everything has stopped is that before now they were engaging in a conversation on their own forum about the future of the software, now they are being completely silent about it.

Denopa – are you merging the data on ARINC429, and what are you displaying it on?

It sounds like I could replace the GTX330 with a GTX345 and get ADS-B IN, while keeping my KLN94 (and thus have no ADS-B OUT whatsoever) for the time being. How much functionality would be left in the GTX345?

Sorry missed this and you may have had some answers on that already.

The GTX345 takes GPS from the GTN, TAS from the TAS600, and puts out ADS-B out, merged traffic (ADS-B In and TAS) to the GTNs and iPad (via Bluetooth), as well as GPS+AHRS for SVT on the iPad. It also send TIS-B traffic and ADS-B In weather to GTNs and iPad although in Europe that’s moot for now.

If the KLN94 can’t export GPS to the GTX to give you ADS-B out, you can get the standalone GPS option for the GTX345, which will give you the full range of the GTX345 functionality although to display the traffic you may need to have Garmin Pilot or Foreflight on an iPad, no idea if will display on the KLN94.

I have been engaging for some time on Avidyne’s forum on the subject of how best to deal with the fact that they mis-sold to a bunch of people (including myself) with a promise that they clearly are not going to honour.

My response, as I have been discussing there, is to advise as many people as possible not to buy Avidyne equipment (of any type) based on their corporate untrustworthy behaviour and the fact that they almost certainly don’t ring-fence that behaviour.

I am in a relatively strong position, because of the seminars I give on PBN, and being one of the authors of the standard book on GA PBN, as well as being an IRI specialising in owners who want to get an IR, meaning that a lot of people ask me for advice on equipment upgrade (usually from GNS430, occasionally 155 or even KNS80) and I am able to give the advice to steer clear of the company, regardless of the product.

But it has been suggested to me on the Avidyne forum that that is unlikely to be helpful in getting them to honour their original promise. Of course, they would say that, wouldn’t they? It is a fanboi site, and one can expect a decent level of loyalty. But nonetheless, I take the point that it hasn’t so far worked.

Has anyone got any more creative ideas as to how to help Avidyne come to the conclusion that it is easier to fulfil their promises than not to do so?

From the point of view of an outsider: if they promised something in the form of a contract, take them to court. If it was not such an enforceable promise, draw your conclusions from their behavior for future dealings, i.e. don’t buy anything where you would rely on later upgrades or support. But I wouldn’t outright boycott them in order to “punish” them for past behavior that is deemed unfair. In the end, we need as many avionics suppliers to choose from as possible in this shrinking market.

Of course I can’t take them to court, they would bury me.
