TB20 N718TB lands on a highway (exposing a cracked spar?)

Here.

Everybody seems to be doing it right now, although this report is from mid-July.

Avgas is getting expensive in airports, take the minimum and worst case fill up using chwap fuel at wallmart gas station

A movement against ridiculous handling fees ?

The road is uphill from there and he stopped pretty short, unfortunately tangling with a car slightly as he did so.

The ATC sound track with Palomar Tower interesting when he tells them he won’t make the airport and the controller says “landing will be at your own risk”. No kidding

Interesting looking ‘Cessna’ 😆

The pilot does sound very calm on the radio, considering

The wing broke off after it hit an SUV, but on various US sites some people are getting pretty excited about what the break in the spar looks like, alleging that it was an old crack.

OTOH you can find any number photos of TB broken off wings post-crash – example.

FWIW it is interesting how in the US you can recycle tail numbers. N718TB became N88GT 21 years ago, but the accident plane is back to N718TB.

If a fatigue crack was present before the plane hit the SUV, there should be some beachmarks indicating propagation before the static failure. A lab metallurgical analysis would easily tell.

I think that bolt looks suspicious. If that’s a normal AN bolt, and the nut is a self locking (nylon) bolt, and I count 5 threads outside the bolt, then the bolt is/could be screwed on past the threads of the bolt.
