Looks like he had 2 mins or less from the failure to being on the ground. 2000 ft AGL, assume about 1000 fpm descent. Two survived, but injured. I’ve seen this aircraft at Aero, and it was beautiful. Just found out about the crash a few mins ago on the VAF.
Crash happened mid 24… but had not heard of it. Hopefully they both fully recovered.
Seemed like a beautiful example of the breed, pity. Any info as to the reason for the engine stoppage?

None that I could find – I registered on the NL “Onderzoeksraad” – Dutch Safety Board for updates.
@eurogaguest1980 could you link the VAF thread please? I heard about this crash a few days ago and was surprised I hadn’t seen any discussion there.
It’s particularly upsetting to see the photos of the wreckage after following the build log and flight testing. I don’t really understand why the ULP was worth installing over the engine that was designed for the plane, but he made a nice job of it anyway.
Having owned a ULP I like the engine but it’s more suited to microlights in my opinion. The overall design and accessories just aren’t beefy enough. This plane had silly problems like an exhaust 3-1 manifold failing and falling off in flight – welding exhausts together is pretty easy so it’s concerning to see a new ULP exhaust failing so quickly.
The twin velocity with two ULP engines crashed badly with fatal injuries to the passenger following loss of power and now this. I had a forced landing with mine too, but that was the fault of the builder of the plane rather than the engine.
At the end of the day it’s another reminder to practice forced landings regularly.

For some reason, searching on the VAF via Google is broken, but here’s the thread:

I was also surprised we didn’t hear about this crash. I hope Marcel and his passenger are ok.
Another crash in June 2024
Another crash in June 2024
That’s the one we’re talking about @Peter…
The ULP was, and still is, an engine I would seriously consider. And it was very close to the top of my choices/decision pyramid when Vans went tits up.
But since the only clue we have is of an engine having quit…
OK; I saw the “I heard about this crash a few days ago” comment…

Indeed – still no idea what happened to cause an emergency landing.

I’m surprised honestly. It doesn’t suit an RV, you’re limited to an electrically actuated prop only, and the engines don’t make the advertised horsepower. They have some oil leak problems for which the ULP recommended fix is to cover the problem in RTV. And for all this, they have the same or worse SFC than a leaned Lycoming.
I really wanted to like them but my own personal experiences plus the apparently high failure rate really makes me glad I no longer own it.
