It’s really worth reading the NTSB witness reports at the end…much discussion of life jackets. Also note they suffered from hypothermia off Hawaii.

Confirms that life jackets should be worn from the start!
Also note they suffered from hypothermia off Hawaii.
Did they really? My understanding was that the person who died did so because of a stress-induced heart attack.
Yes, but if you read the NTSB reports there is talk of hypothermia. Also the person who died was wearing an infant’s LJ.
I watched the video a few days ago when it started doing the rounds. Interestingly the operator applied a TBO extension STC but didn’t comply with some inspection requirements, and this is believed to be a key factor in the engine shredding itself.
The land was not all that far away and a reasonable swimmer could have swum ashore. One did.

Which drives home the need for a proper safety briefing… And again that in this category of aircraft life vests should be worn from the start.

There is this misconception in Europe that the Pacific is a warm ocean, like the Med. It’s any thing but.

There is a misconception in the Americas that the Med is an ocean, it’s not. (Sorry, couldn’t resist)

And it evaporates at higher rate than it’s filled with fresh water from rivers. Luckily it’s topped up by Atlantic Ocean.
So you are saying that if you ditch in the Atlantic you’d be ok because eventually you’d be swept into the med, where it’s warm?

Kind of but Med is not always and everywhere warm. E.g. Adriatic sea can be as low as 7 degrees in February in northern part while it’s never below 12 in southern part. I guess Sicily and Crete are much warmer even in winter time.
