Do DME's transmit at all?

I looked up Consol. Very clever.

I can see it gave you an accurate "radial". But how did one get the distance along the "radial"? Were there more than one ground station so you could triangulate?

There were stations at Stavanger (LEC) Norway, Quimper (FRQ) France, Lugo (LG)Spain and Bush Mills (MWN) Ireland. They all operated at around 300 KHz. Bush Mills was blown up by the IRA and that ended Consol. Two counts and you had a fix anywhere in Northern Europe.
