Any other IFR options than EDDL for getting to Essen?
All help appreciated.
Personally, I wouldn’t worry and fly the appraoch at EDDL if required, then land at EDLE.
However, Essen bans jet aircraft! 
As one of very few of that kind in Germany.
Is Dortmund cheaper without expensive mandatory handling?
Not sure for the Mustang. A 1.5 ton single is 30 (Dortmund) vs. 150 (Düsseldorf) roughly.
You could also take EDLN Mönchengladbach http://www.mgl.de/ into consideration, though it’s a little farther from Essen. It’s well connected with motorways and has an ILS, too. I suppose it’s about 45 minutes by car (outside the rush hours).
EDLD is also not too far away, but VFR only.
EDLA is home to a handful Jets, I think they use EDLW for cloud breaking or departures. Might be a bit cheaper in handling and fees.

Unfortunately they had to due to noise complains of some residents. However I see jets landing there now and then, so there must be some sort of exception or one has to bring an organ ready for transplantation in a cooling box for the nearby teaching hospital, which also happens quite frequently. I suppose, the latter isn’t an option for Jason
