Flying and cooking/dining, along with some praise of Britain

10 Posts

Anyone here interested in cooking / good dining along with flying?

This guy (probably well known in Blighty) travels around the UK in an Aztec as he samples some of the local specialities and praises the products of the UK. Not too many flying scenes, but I still how he casually incoporporates the flying, thus making a case for the usefulness of GA flying for getting from A to B. I would think that this is the kind of stuff that makes people (who were previously unaware of what personal flying can be like) to start learning to fly…

He does take the controls briefly in one scene, but not sure if he is a licensed pilot. Anyone know?

No idea about the person, but at least he manages to come across as an accomplished cook. Not so clear what the plane has to do in it all, though. And while he does show that Britain has excellent resources, he implies at the same time that few are able to prepare them to optimal effect. Which is contrary to my experience: I have enjoyed many a lunch and dinner in Old Blighty.

To answer the side (?) question: I much appreciate a good dinner, but just like in flying I prefer things simple and straightforward, and affordable for a small purse. Which explains my preference for Italy, and the former socialist countries.

He is a pilot and the series if fine but has only a peripheral relation to flying. Food in England can be good just not at airfields.

Same here. I was in Budapest the last two days and I am impressed once again that there still are European capital cities (even tourist attracting ones!) where you can have an excellent dinner with drinks and everything included for the equivalent of 20 Euros. In Paris or London the same quality of food and drink would have cost 50 or 60 Euros. And I don’t have the impression that people in Budapest live less well than in Paris.

Thanks Jason. As I said, the flying being peripheral to the series is fine, I think. Only flying geeks would watch it if were mostly about the flying.

I guess he is habitually flying from the airfield shown briefly at 1:05. Popham?

The accountant in me would think that by brining his hobby into the show, it’s a good way of getting a tax deduction for it

If you are a self employed person and have no obvious main place of work, and you use the plane to travel around, you can generally tax deduct the flying.

Otherwise, you have really got to watch it, because the Revenue here detest people who are deducting something they enjoy.
