1914-1918 commemoration

However the will lacks because of financial interests.

Too easy. It often does not happen due to the simple but wrong belief that “it can’t go this bad”. How many went for appeasement against Hitler and other warmongers only to find out that it did not work in the end? To say that decisive action against people who later turned out to be war perpetrators is monday morning quarterbacking at the highest level. If they had known, sure, but who really could imagine this? As for the Yugoslavian war, what financial interest?

Germany was trying to arrange a cease-fire from 1916 onwards, why was it not accepted?

Probably because the war goal of the allied forces was to destroy Germany to such an extent, that it would not be capable of ever rising again? The same was considered in WW2 and initially happened too (would have been a sight worse if the war had carried on until the US had it’s nukes ready).

Post WW2 Germany was initially split into the 4 zones to avoid it regrowing into a strategic power. As we know this has changed in the mean time and Germany is once more the probably most influential nation in Europe. BUT the difference is that due to the Marshall plan there was no similar resentment then existed due to the Versaille peace accord. Yet the resolve to keep Germany from regaining strenght as a strategic country fell in the cold war rather quickly and allowed it to regrow to almost the full size it used to have prior WW2.

Looking at most countries which have triggered large wars the same picture emerges, they are back where they were before or even stronger.

Thanks @MedEwok….thankfully these days our commemorations of Armistice Day / Veteran’s Day (and ANZAC Day where I’m from) is becoming more focused on the horror and tragedy of war and the ultimate sacrifices made by ordinary people and soldiers of the time…on all sides of any conflict …at the seemingly cold behest of distant self-interested leaders…. This is why “Lest we forget” is such an important mantra. “Lest we forget”… not just the horror but also the politics and leaders that instigated and perpetrated that horror…

Any war could have been prevented/stopped/avoided by starting a different war instead?

You would be amazed how much money can be earned during war time. If you haven’t seen it fist hand, you can only guess.

During WW1, a certain Wall street banker firm was the UK government ‘buyers agent’, taking a commission on everything sold to sustain the war, they were giving loans with interest, they were the owners of the arms factories making the same arms being paid with their loans. No wonder they were not in a hurry to get it over with.
If we can learn anything from the past, it is not to make the same mistakes in the future.
