Autorouter issues and questions (merged)

Peter posted a link to a tracking page at the autorouter web site for his flight to the fly-in.

Did not see any announcements about this feature. How does it work? Same as Rocketroute? Are they both using some API from Eurocontrol?

We use the CPRs (consolidated position reports) which are in fact radar blips sent to Eurocontrol by the national ATC units. These come regularly, between 1 minute and 10 minute intervals, mostly depending on the country.

When you file a flight plan, you get a tracking URL which you may choose to post or keep secret. The URL cannot be guessed.

Thanks for the info!

For comedy value, this route from Biggin to Weston has to be a new record:

(This is actually a screenshot taken after autorouter gave up – this didn’t validate with IFPS)

For Oxford to Oberpfaffenhofen tomorrow I originally got Oxford, West Wales, Germany as the RR routing. EuroGA Router just gave up.

@jwoolard this should work: EGKB DET N57 SAPCO Y53 WAL L10 PENIL DCT BABRA DCT BAGSO DCT DAP VFR EIWT

Not yet sure what’s going wrong…

This is an old problem and is the result of the rules which the UK publishes to Eurocontrol.

Unless you have an F16 and can climb straight to say FL250 or whatever, you can’t depart from Biggin Hill to the west. It interferes with the LHR and LGW procedures.

You have to go Z, fly VFR (in IMC as necessary) at 2300ft for a bit and then change to IFR at CPT.

See this trip report. It contains the track actually flown, etc

The only way an autorouter could handle this case is to detect this particular route and simply force Z.

I have just done this routing, with all default settings but with a VFR departure, and got this

EGKB N0152VFR GOXUL/N0152F100 IFR L9 MALBY/N0152F110 L9 WOTAN/N0150F120 L9 BADIM/N0148F130 L9 ALVIN/N0147F140 L9 ERNOK/N0146F150 L9 STU/N0152F100 DCT VATRY DCT LUSAT/N0145F040 DCT WST EIWT

The routing now produces the expected result. The reason was that the NATS standard route employed a DCT segment longer than 50NM which we did not allow in UK airspace.

We should handle the EGKB departures well, they are contained in the standard route document (SRD).

Is there a new westerly IFR departure from EGKB, Achim?

Of course not, but it wouldn’t feel like London if you could depart on your desired course, would it?

Autorouter also offers a VFR departure from EGKB with the 9% overhead routing you mentioned earlier. You no longer have to tweak the settings to see this alternative.
