Query re FAA and CAA aeromedical exams / UK CAA "not allowing" Class 2 during lockdown

Letter sent to AMEs

They appear to be saying that nobody who is not flying for work should be asking for a Class 2 medical and should do the medical self declaration instead.

You can’t fly abroad on it but that is a bit tricky right now anyway.

Interesting. This leads one to question why a medical is at all necessary for private pilots if it isn’t necessary now…

The way that is written gives you a fair degree of insight into what sort of thinking prevails at the CAA.

A couple of paragraphs of “we’re going to tell you how you should interpret regulations” followed by a threat to sanction anyone who might interpret them differently.

As regards the threat, I wonder if Covid regulations contain a blanket get-out around GDPR – i.e. anyone can use your personal data for the purposes of reporting a Covid regs breach?

And the worst part is

ReportingSubsystemDetailsAs we have been doing during this COVID period, we continue to monitor weekly AME activity by volume and medical class and will be able to identify cases where the applicant appears to have breached the current Government lockdown regulations.

Why on earth do they think it is the CAA’s role to police whether AME’s are doing medicals which are not essential? The mindset underlying this is atrocious.

The tone of the letter is indeed really amazing.

Ha ha ha. They don’t say you can fly without a medical any more than you could pre-COVID. They say that if your medical expired, just don’t do any flying that requires a medical, except if/when being paid for it.

What are they really saying? That a pilot who makes a visit to an AME for the purpose of revalidating a class 2 medical license is breaching the lockdown regulations? And that an AME who carries out an examination for the purpose of revalidating a class 2 medical license is “colluding” with the pilot in that?

Doesn’t the UK CAA have anything better to do than this kind of micromanagement?

Yes, unless the class 2 is used for work, such as instructing for money or commercial balloon activities.

Well, the CAA as a whole has, but not the department that issued this >;-)

Is braking the Covid regulation a crime in the UK? That would explain some of the mailing …

It will be interesting to see what Norway CAA will do now when the second wave is in full motion. They extended the validity of all licenses and medicals some months back, but no longer than November 17. It’s only a week from now.
