Lazy eights using rudder only

here

I wonder if there is something there not applicable to us.

“A little knowledge of practical aerodynamics goes a long way to making us better pilots.”

What this guy describes is not aerodynamics, but flight mechanics (or flight dynamics, whatever one wants to call it) – just nitpicking.

Most of it. Our airplanes don’t have the range of speeds and inertia required for this kind of manoeuvering and they are far more stable in all axes. Fighter jets have rather neutral stability.

The author describes using large bank angles to lower the nose quickly. I was taught this as an anti collision maneuver, and when shown, I learned that if you close the thottle while rolling to say 60 degrees of bank (to stay legal ) it’s amazing how much altitude you lose quickly… assuming the plane has a quick-ish roll rate. Then roll level and recover.
