SAT24 v. Meteox v. Windy.com v. Golze ADL radar images - why so different?

I thought all this data came from the OPERA consortium which was formed by the national weather offices for the purpose of combining and commercialising (selling) the wx radar data they collect.

For reference, below is the sferics image

It seems that sferics is aligned with meteox while sat24 shows much better weather. My experience is the same – sat24 usually shows better situation than actually is but I don’t know why.

Prehaps Sat24 is a satellite rain image vs Meteox being a ground base radar image? The Sat24 has returns out in the atlantic outside wx radar range…

Both are not using proper radar data as both show weather in areas which are definitely not covered. For aviation I suggest to use at least sources which indicate properly what the data means, how it was measured and what the actual coverage area is. There are many companies using cheap satellite data and calling it somehow “radar”.

Most of the data can be purchased from ECOMET but the cost of the full package for full internet use if very high so I do not know any legal website offering this data for free. You might want to try radareu.cz but their legal situation is also fragile.

OK; thanks – I forgot about that site. It definitely seems to use ground based radar, looking at the coverage circles. Let me do another comparison:

Sferics:

Since the CZ site seems a lot more similar to Meteox than to SAT24, and given the great observation above that SAT24 includes data over open oceans it looks like SAT24 is the one to not use if you want radar data.

The above site http://www.radareu.cz seems to have died.

Works for me.

Right now, south east UK, there is drizzle.

I have noticed this before. On my departure from LFBP on Friday 17/8/18 it showed nothing at all for LFBP but there was a lot of rain, and the Golze ADL system did show “stuff”, as an area of green.

It should show some rain but as usual one has to check multiple sources

All Rain Radar images are smoothened out to eliminate false reflects and the mechanism by which they do it is different for each software solution or app showing the rain. I have been looking into this quite extensively some time ago and have kept some images of the actual raw radar images and compared them with the results of several apps that show rain radar results and discussed this even with a professor specialized in Doppler radar. You can find some comparison images here. Below the actual radar images, you will find the tilt of the radar described. Tilt 1 Reflectivity mode is the most used in the apps if they can actually tilt the Doppler Radar at all.
