German AIP-VFR, free online access coming in 2023

Hot off the press:

https://www.dfs.de/homepage/de/medien/presse/2022/11-juli-2022-luftfahrthandbuch-sichtflug-kostenfrei/

I guess that will mean it will also become FOC in Skydemon.

Mainz (EDFZ) & Egelsbach (EDFE), Germany

And there was much rejoicing.

Wow!!

ESKC (Uppsala/Sundbro), Sweden

A german pilot filed a lawsuit against DFS to challenge the practice of hiding the AIP behind a paywall. Maybe they decided, ok what the heck.

Safe landings !

Great news ! For once a positive note.
Congrats to this german pilot and thank you DFS.

LFOU, France

That is really good news, if true…

Great news and definitely a plus for safety!
Even the French have had this info free of charge (SIA website) for as long as I can remember!

This is great; the situation was laughable, especially as German airfields which published the plates on their websites were reportedly threatened with litigation.

This is indeed good news, especially now in times of high inflation.

AFAIK, only Switzerland and Lithuania remain with VFR AIP’s, which are subject to a charge in Europe. In Switzerland, Skyguide has to ask money for their VFR AIP, as the national law orders a “polluter pays principle”. On the other side, almost next to all Swiss aerodromes post their approach plates from Skyguide for free on their homepage, just with this famous “should not be used for navigation” disclaimer. Don’t know about Lithuania, except for the fact that they charge money for their VFR AIP as well online (and it can’t be bought via Skydemon, Foreflight, EasyVFR or other navigation software).

Hope the DFS will include the complete VFR AIP in the Eurocontrol PAMS database, otherwise, Skydemon might not include it anymore in the software. As for example the Slovakian VFR AIP is available for free, but not part of the Eurocontrol PAMS database, Tim Dawson refused to add it to Skydemon with following reason:

“Since the VFR manual you mentioned is available freely online, it would be a lot of investment to automate its integration and updating into SkyDemon just to save people visiting their website. Perhaps the publishers will consider using the Eurocontrol PAMS database to host it in the future, at which point we could integrate it”

and

“We integrate certain third-party products where we have a contractual relationship with the author and, and make a small margin on the cost price of those products in order to cover our costs for maintaining them and georeferencing the documents. Offering a free product, outside of a contract, is a very different business proposition. It isn’t something we have done before.”

That’s quite funny, at multiple levels…
