I wouldn’t assume a piston FIKI can punch through on top if there is extensive moderate icing – the boots are there to help you get out of icing conditions.

We don’t know the forecast but that is sort of my point. You either are happy with the weather and that you can climb through any potential icing and the PA46 copes well with light icing, or you don’t go.

The metars look ok but the tafs resemble the actual situation (a whiteout) reported by the rescue team in the transcript link I posted.

Rmk codes are obscure in the US/Canada . SLP is sea level pressure ie QNH. The others indicate the type of metar reporting station I believe.
