Switzerland to introduce a 500 CHF tax per private flight

And with the socialist minister of transport in charge, who while officially disproving of the Minder postulate (500 francs per movement) only did so because she felt it was not effective enough to destroy GA fully, we may expect rather interesting times ahead of us…

That’s interesting how these people perceive their jobs and themselves as important. I bet if she didn’t show at her office for a year, nothing would happen, nobody would notice and everything would work normally in Switzerland.

Sounds frivolous but it made me wonder – how could we make airports feel more relevant to non pilots? Emphasize on their economic impact?

Maybe publicize ecologists’ recent findings that airports function as refuges for endangered species. Try to get that enshrined in the local regulations like it is done at LKLT and LKKL, which harbour colonies of the European ground squirrel, which holds the critically endangered status in Czechia.

LKBU (near Prague), Czech Republic

I’m trying something along these lines (at my little scale): I offered to install small apiaries next Spring at several local airports. The goal is to grow colonies and to perform some selection based on their resistance to the varroa mite (no honey production).

So far I’ve had very positive feedback for the project; I closed on one field already and 5 more are in the pipe. The standard deal is that I get the spot for free (we’re talking of maybe 20 sqm) in exchange for mentioning the airfield’s efforts towards biodiversity in the communication material.

If anyone here would like to make a similar offer to their local airfield, please get in touch, I’d be happy to see if we can make a deployment there as well.

Looks as if they want to impose it only to aircraft with more than 5,7t.

A tax of between CHF 500 – 5000 depending on weight and only above 5,7 t. Actually not unreasonable.

ok, looks we are safe this time. When is the next time someone is introducing the perfect idea how to save the planet, increase government income and punish those terrible reach people who are flying their or rented 40 years old aircraft?

Well, Greta will be happy, and the govt will get an insignificant bit of money which will probably cost more to collect. And the message to international business will be “don’t come to Switzerland”.

Yes, but in all likelihood, many many businesses will rather come to Switzerland (and pay 500 or 5000 CHF a few times), but will still earn or save many times that much as an effect of being in Switzerland…

I thought Switzerland did some deal with the EU on tax evasion, disclosure, etc, as a part of the zero tariff package.

Peter, “being in Switzerland” for a business doesn’t mean tax evasion… It means actually having your business in Switzerland. With a VAT rate of 8% rather than about 20% in the EU, an income tax rate of 12% to 21.5% (depending on the canton and city), etc. Your employees may be a bit more expensive than in some other parts of the EU, but for some business the total package is attractive.
