Need help with Noise level information.

Just when I thought I had things in hand, I come upon this piece of information from EDJA Memmington Airport pilot information on fees.
Can anyone help me interpret this information? I have a C210 which falls into Cat 2 with one being the most quiet. However view this by EDJA I am totally confused.

Appendix: Noise Categories
Noise category 4 (“increased noise protection”)
Propeller-driven aircraft up to MTOM 9,000 kg and powered gliders built in or after the year 2000 fulfil the increased noise protection requirements, provided they fall short of the noise thresholds specified in Appendix 2 of LLV
- Chapter VI by at least 6 dB(A) or
- Chapter X by at least 7 dB(A)
Propeller-driven aircraft above 9,000 kg MTOM and jet aircraft included in the current edition of the combined arrivals and departures list (“An- oder Abflugliste (Kombination)”) published by the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Affairs (“Bundesministerium für Verkehr, Bau- und Stadtentwicklung”), along with aircraft meeting the conditions specified in ICAO Annex 16, Chapter 4.
Noise category 3 (“special noise protection – new”)
According to §4 Paragraph 2 of LLV (“Landeplatz-Lärmschutz-Verordnung” or “Airfield Noise Protection Regulations”), propeller-driven aircraft up to MTOM 9,000 kg and gliders built before 1 January, 2000 fulfill the increased noise protection requirements provided they fall short of the noise thresholds specified in
- Chapter VI by at least 4 dB(A) or
- Chapter X by at least 5 dB(A)
Noise category 2 (“special noise protection – old”)
The maximum level of noise emitted by a propeller-driven aircraft up to 9,000 kg MTOM must satisfy, at a minimum, the noise threshold specified in Appendix 2 of LLV (“Landeplatz- Lärmschutz-Verordnung” or “Airfield Noise Protection Regulations”).
Propeller aircraft above 9,000 kg MTOM and jet aircraft fulfilling the requirements of ICAO Annex 16, chapter 3.

The price varies significantly. My noise certificate is in the plane so I cant even view that.
Thanks for any help in advance.

Well, I remember this is not the first time.
How about keeping a copy of your noise certificate electronically available ?
It will state how much you are above/below certain limits.
Depends on exhaust and prop and max rpm – but in the end, only paper and stamp counts. So…

You are correct this is not the first time. I thought this crap was behind me. Well it was for about 5 yrs. I had it on my computer but Ive gone to a Mac and like I said the paperwork is in the plane. In the meantime do you know where would I find the limits for Chapter X using the internet?

How good is your German ? It’s formulas

Should 80 and 88 und chapter 6 and 10, respectively, for you…

The quietest (cheapest landing fee) category is “Erhöhter Schallschutz” (increased noise protection) and is, for airplanes:

  • of MTOW between 1500 kg and 9000 kg, based on ICAO Annex 16 Vol 1 Chapter 10 (noise at takeoff), maximum 78 db(A)
  • of MTOW 500 kg or less, maximum 61 db(A)
  • linear variation in between: maximum (61 + 0,017 ⋅ (MTOW – 500)) dB(A)

If you have an older noise certificate, based on ICAO Annex 16 Vol 1 Chapter 6 (noise at overflight at 1000 ft):

  • of MTOW between 1500 kg and 9000 kg, based on ICAO Annex 16 Vol 1 Chapter 10 (noise at takeoff), maximum 70 db(A)
  • of MTOW 600 kg or less, maximum 58 db(A)
  • linear variation in between: maximum (58 + (MTOW – 600) ⋅ 4/300) dB(A)

The references to chapter VI and chapter X refer to Volume 1 of Annex 16 of the convention on international civil aviation. Annex 16 deals with environmental protection and volume 1 with aircraft noise. I think this costs about $200 and I don’t have an up to date copy but the bones of it are:

Chapter VI sets noise limits for aircraft for which the application for type certification was made before 1988 and chapter X is for later aircraft.

Chapter VI gives the limit as:
“a 68 dB(A) constant limit up to an aeroplane mass of 600 kg, varying linearly with mass from that point to 1 500 kg, after which the limit is constant at 80 dB(A) up to 8 618 kg"

Chapter X gives:
“a) for aeroplanes specified in 10.1.2 and 10.1.4, a 76 dB(A) constant limit up to an aeroplane mass of 600 kg varying
linearly from that point with the logarithm of aeroplane mass until at 1 400 kg the limit of 88 dB(A) is reached after
which the limit is constant up to 8 618 kg; and
b) for aeroplanes specified in 10.1.4, a 70 dB(A) constant limit up to an aeroplane mass of 570 kg increasing linearly
from that point with the logarithm of aeroplane mass until at 1 500 kg the limit of 85 dB(A) is reached after which the
limit is constant up to 8 618 kg.

It’s complicated but roughly speaking, (a) is for derivatives of aircraft first certified before 1988 and (b) is for new designs.

I guess a C210 is pre 1988, so they want you to be 4 dB less than the chapter VI level.

ICAO docs (most) are online. See here and search for “ICAO”. I see Vol 1 of Annex 16 there.

I have something like 5 noise certificates. Some from Socata (no aircraft reg, just serial number). Some from the UK CAA (G-reg, and serial number). Then the standard N-reg home-made one. Some airports refuse to accept most or all of them, especially the ones showing no or previous reg. Half the problem is that they live in the back of the plane and when one gets to the payment desk one has no way to get back to the plane because of the armed escort involved

Ok so would that mean a 76 db? Am I interpreting it correctly?

That is a great table of contents link to all the past topics. Posted it into my favorites.
I did look under ICAO documents and I did not see Vol 1 of Annex 16
I also did not see a search function.

Use browser search Control-F for “find”.
