Include some “firewalls”, if ever so fragile, this will greatly slow down the speed

Firewalls do not significantly slow down the speed unless they are separating an entirely unaffected population from infection. Or to use the analogy – once the fire is out of control in two places, building a firewall between them has very little effect.

Hence – keeping people at home in very small units – effective.
Closing borders – way too late now.

Keeping control of the news and of the mass psyche is equally important

One of the most striking things when reading the advice received by the UK government was that it has LOTS of that in it.

For example – I am paraphrasing – “Stopping mass gatherings has next to no effect because only a very small proportion of interactions happen there and on the way there, but you probably have to do anyway it because other countries are doing it and hence people expect it”.

Italians only smoke slightly more than Germans, despite the much higher death rate at present.

Not sure about how historical smoking rates differ.

Meanwhile in Russia: principal infectious diseases specialist for Stavropol krai (population ~3 million) went to Spain in March, Madrid, came back in a few days. Did not tell anyone. After that she returned to her work (she is a professor at the Department of Infectious Diseases at the local University) and continued working with colleagues and students. Has been hospitalised with Covid symptoms.
Google translation of the news article (https://www.rbc.ru/society/21/03/2020/5e754df89a794720683ebb6b) is somewhat accurate.

I understand that heavy isolation measures take a couple of weeks to come through in the observed data.

I wonder if we will see another wave come through when china releases their lockdown and people start moving around again.

The Guardian discusses Germany’s comparably low mortality rate of 0.3%, compared to 9% for Italy and 4.6% for the UK:

The article does not give a definite answer to the question why Germany has been “lucky” so far. Most people here expect it’s just a matter of time until we are in a spot like Italy is now.

We are all anxiously awaiting some “positive” news. Just read that in Lombardy “only” 360 dead during the last 24 hrs compared to 546 in the 24-hr period before that. Let’s hope the data is accurate and that it’s an indication of the flattening of the curve that we are all hoping for.

Yes indeed. Italy has been paying a heavy price for some as yet unclear combination of circumstances.

The UK data from today is interesting. These are intensive care, not dying, but the numbers of those recovering are hardly encouraging either

From the Daily Trash but citing a credible source.

In contrast, someone told me yesterday that those dying in Austria are mostly over 90.

I wonder if others here can post some numbers from their countries?

In the meantime Brits are behaving particularly stupidly, packing country parks etc. These are now being closed.
