Corona / Covid-19 Virus - General Discussion (politics go to the Off Topic / Politics thread)

Could this potentially be a big looming issue for medicals?

That makes sense because people not hospitalised are presumably largely not known about.

However, is that the German study referred to?? The above links points to this one from the US.

Yes, obviously, this could impact aviation medicals, for those who got bad enough to get to a hospital. For the rest, recovering at home, nobody will know you had it unless the damage is bad enough to show up on an ECG.

The astonishing statistic is that 600k Brits are now “trapped” in Spain.

Prob90 that includes the Brits living there, of which there are many, and in reality even more because a huge proportion don’t show up in official figures.

Someone recently explained to me that the C19 virus affects the circulation system, not by necessarily the lungs.

The reason the lungs are affected is that the blood becomes ineffective at carrying oxygen and thus the lungs work harder to achieve the same oxygen levels.

After a while, the lungs start suffering side effects, but the root cause is in the blood

True? False? Anyone have clear insight on this?

The virus can infect a number of different types of cells. It enters cells via the ACE2 receptor which is found in the lungs, heart and some areas of the brain. The latter is meant to account for the loss of smell which is often a symptom of the disease. It may also use another receptor basigin which is found on blood cells.

People with COVID are very prone to developing blood clots which can affect any part of the body, and the inflammatory changes can certainly obliterate the lungs, so it’s not as simple as just changing the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood.

News from a local company that makes a flu mouth spray called Coldzyme (I have been using it since the pandemic begun as a precaution without any evidence, good to hear that it is actually somewhat effective):

ESME, ESMS

Just read that across the varieties of this disease, the two symptoms which everybody had were

  • headache, and
  • loss of smell

The others e.g. hypoxia vary.

That’s an amazing find, Dimme. Of course you won’t be able to buy the stuff now

There could be bad reporting e.g. is it really 75% of all survivors which have the heart attack signature?

So what is a “survivor”? Anyone who has had the disease and not died from it? Those who have been in intensive care and survived, or something in between…?

ESKC (Uppsala/Sundbro), Sweden

Need to find the original German study referred to.

The background to the sudden UK move seems to be this. It does seem an over-reaction, and with the Daily Trash you have to read with a bit of “care” (they do reliably dig out the really good dirt though, which say the BBC would never publish, and they aren’t behind a paywall) but an (unspoken) backdrop may be that a lot of heavy clubbing is spreading the stuff nicely. The same was found in Greece (Mykonos and Zakynthos) but that was tourists from N. mainland Europe. Banning the Spanish islands too seems an over-reaction no matter how you look at it.
