Corona / Covid-19 Virus - General Discussion (politics go to the Off Topic / Politics thread)

The UK has just updated its interactive map to include June. This (deaths) is obviously lagging quite a bit in time – 2-3 weeks after infections

By and large, this seems to mirror the UK’s population density, for obvious reasons:

Edit: is there a way to downsize this picture with the forum code, Peter?

[done – only way is to do a new graphic of the desired size and upload that]

Yes, it does, but there are important variations as the epidemic develops. Take the June only deaths. You see strange concentrations in Kent (very far south east corner) which is definitely not a place where many people live.

One can zoom in on the map.

For current infection data, there is a way to dig out where the Kent spots are, using this site together with a list of Kent districts. However, going through the parts of Kent it looks like e.g. Folkestone (where the Channel tunnel comes off) is pretty bad. No idea why. Care homes?

Possibly those coming over in small boats from France without papers?

Very much doubt it; they are mostly very young and unlikely to get ill with it – as evidenced by the lack of issues in the densely packed camps on the Greek islands.

Good point, Unless it was brought in and then passed around.

Much like the skiiers coming over early on.

However that seems unlikely as one would imagine most are being pretty careful about things

Over here, they are talking of about 10% of cases being imported.

the largest spreads come from people visiting clubs and discos, followed by restaurants and other entertainment venues. Therefore, all of those should be restricted or closed, particularly clubs and discos, where people shout at each other due to the loud music… no wonder at all. Ischgl all over again.

I do hope that with upcoming colder season they will take proper precautions and will not allow the same kind of super spreading events such as Ischgl and similar ones. If necessary i suppose they might as well cancel the skiing season this year or if they allow it, then under absolutely strict safety precautions. Certainly there is no place for apres ski bars, clubs, lounges and similar this year nor for tightly packed restaurants.

With retrospect they will find that easing restrictions to “rescue” the summer season for tourism will have caused a lot of infections and disease. It would have been better they had not opened up this year or only locally. It is a shame that those countries which initially did well with harsh measures have thrown the whole effort away by letting tourists back in in the full knowledge of the consequences. Those who impose 14 days of quarantine to travellers who obviously come from countries with high infection rates will maybe fare better, it might have been certainly better if quarantine had never been lifted in those countries who did not have a lot of cases. Many are now paying a huge price for a tourist season which has not worked anyway.

Farm crop pickers? In crowded accommodation? Temporary workers, from outwith th UK?
PS Peter’s interactive map looks to be England, not the UK.

Given the undoubted benefits it is surprising that UK and Ireland have not adopted this policy. Creating a zero infection group of islands is practically and easily possible, in effect already the case in many island countries. Taiwan is the closest to being an industrial economy and their manufacturing and exports is pretty well back to normal. Hopefully the Irish cabinet will start to advocate the case.

Does not seem so easy for a larger country like Australia.
