Yes, it is. I fly a N-reg Mooney and hope to pass the ATPL theory over the winter, and get an IR right after that.
The easy way out for me would be to do a IR at an ATO in their plane, but if there is a better way, why not explore it.

I did the IR by the CB route in 2017 but at age 69 and 11 months not sure it would be a typical experience.
