How long do you think until UBER-like jobs will be a thing for CPL holders? (quadcopter air taxi viability)

Every other week there’s another new start-up threatening to be the UBER of the sky in big cities filled with people that could afford such a service, like San Francisco.

Do you think it will be before or after the electrical planes really “take off” that we will ever get to be able to sign up for an UBER-like job where you fly people around and it actually becomes another (better) job that you can take with CPL, or maybe the find a loophole for PPL or they have create their own new type of hybrid license.

What do you think, will we live to see this happen during our lifetime?

Switzerland

A good part of the pilots flying for e.g. RYR or EZY today are not employed by those companies, but by contractors for cheaper wages and poorer conditions, and are de facto already Uberised
The fully automated airborne e-vehicles of the future won’t have a pilot (or system manager, or reset performer)… so no, no new pilot job openings.
Generally speaking, and for many reasons, the future I see will have automation take over all fighter/airline/commercial pilot, and ATC jobs…

Not sure about your age, but I doubt I will able to witness this

A CPL is practically useless in Europe unless you get a job at an AOC operator, and have a CPL/IR, preferably with the 13 “ATPL” exams so your CPL/IR is called a “frozen ATPL”.

So any transport of the public requires practically an “airline” operation. That makes it uneconomical.

As far as pilotless aircraft go, there is no legal framework for an airline doing public transport in pilotless aircraft. Obviously somebody will need to carry the liability there… That will be a challenge for the next generation Whether pilotless aircraft can ever work is another matter… the “quadcopter” configurations (needed to avoid runways) need a huge amount of power. The challenge is the same as with electric cars but much much harder. Various previous threads on this topic, and indeed lots of VC money has gone into this area

Actually, it’s happening next year with paying passengers, it will be operated by RATP (this is like TFL in London, who licence London Uber Taxis)

There is s**t load of money, brain power and political will to push it through….EASA is working (or forced to work) on certification outside CS25 framework, given the user case being a local transport mode there is less concerns on ICAO compliance and level playing field from lack of AOC, EASA is involved due to “safety aspect”

DGAC and Military have load of objections due to penetration of Prohibited Area under 6000ft

It won’t work for “Public Transport” cross borders even if the technology allows it

I would be impressed with low windy IMC in these in urban area, who want to go first?

Yes the hype is working overtime.

Technology lags by many years.

However we have gone this in many threads. The OP was talking about CPL jobs.

No it won’t….

I hope you are right (they close Pontoise anytime those ugly things fly)

The OP was talking about CPL jobs

The only CPL/IR jobs are in FTO
