New forum maybe?

Hi Peter,

I have been giving some thought that maybe EuroGA could have an additional forum to collect and present information which might be helpful to newer pilots. Many of us have wisdom and war stories, which might fit well into a forum for learning. It would also be a place to discuss the background of accidents – not so much to trash some unfortunate pilot, but rather to review and discuss the background of the event, and how to be better pilots to prevent doing it ourselves…

How about a “Techniques and Safety” forum?

Any views on this – anyone?

Isn’t that what we do in all fora? But it requires some effort on the reader’s side.

If you want something more easily digestable by a reader, then there would have to be a lot of editing effort. I don’t think creating new fora would help in any way.

It seems to me that there is no need for a specific forum for these kind of threads. They would fit perfectly in the flying forum. Accidents are about flying, no? In my opinion, too many forums and too specialised ones are not useful. Already, there seems to be confusion between the flying forum and the hangar talk one. Often, I think that threads in the flying forum would be more relevant in the hangar talk one. Threads about regulations for exemple. It is of no real importance and there is no harm done. But why add an other forum to check to see if there are interesting threads developping there?

Hmm, Okay…

I see this website (and, in fairness, other piloing websites too) as an ideal place to gather and grow a library of topics, which become a searchable resource for those looking. My opinion is that the scope of piloting is broadening, and basic training may not be keeping pace. On the other side, some techniques are slipping from our present way of doing things. Non mainstream skills are still out there, but perhaps more compartmentalized, with smaller groups of pilots. And then there’s just the off beat – how do you handle skis frozen into the packed snow?

No one can maintain all of the skills. When I think about how much I have forgotten about flying IFR, after not flying the winter IMC night runs in the Aztec and Cheyenne for 30 years, I revel in having developed the skills to tuck the Teal into a carfully chosen isolated lake, of to safely spin a modified Caravan. We all have skills and techniques to offer.

My job is to assure that a modified plane continues to conform to the applicbale design requirements, and more importantly, try to figure out what a tired, or poorly trained, or simply foolish pilot could do or not do to create an unsafe situation – and prevent that. I think about circumstances of accidents a lot!

Perhaps discussions of some aspects of some of flyings more simple things, would be pleasing for readers here, who more read than post.

Your original idea certainly looks appealing, at least to me. I’m sure I could learn from such readings. But why create an new forum whereas there are already 2 of them to accomodate such threads : flying and student pilots.
