Was there by any chance a long delay before the location of the wreckage was discovered?

The desert must be littered with aircraft wreckage, because in the old days you merely needed to mis-navigate with your NDB bearings over those parts and you would never make it to civilisation; you would run out of fuel.

From what I understand they did find the wreckage pretty quickly along the filed route since larger parts of the fuselage and wings were still intact, and identifiable by aerial reconnisance.
It took considerably longer to get the Libyans to admit responsibility, and finally pay compensation to the families.

Sad story, and a tragic waste. The intended target was not even onboard at the time.

I admire the sprit behind the memorial, and I found it quite moving.

Indeed. And given recent developments in this part of the world, a good thing too you can see it on Google Earth. Going there isn’t an option anymore :-((
