Possible Fly-in

Sorry my mistake about Mannheim - post edited.

And exactly the same comment for my other half

I would be interested too, but depends on the distance involved.

Customs isn't an issue for me, as I'd most likely have to clear them well before the destination.

Having seen the amount of work that goes into organising the PocketFMS flyins, I would suggest that it's important to choose a destination where someone local on the ground is willing to do the organising and dealings with the airport.

It's also important to have good social facilities on the airport. No point going to a big international airport where the only place to wait, meet, greet and socialise is some big souless terminal that everyone just wants to leave!

One would want good wx because any city is a crap place to be in when it's raining

Assuming that most of us have to plan such things well ahead of the time and looking at what the meteorologists are promising for this winter, I'd say we may want to take things slowly and plan this event for March if not April. I do have vested interests, as I am leaving for Israel next week and will only be back in about 3 months, but on the other hand, I am willing to organise the things on the ground when I'm back if we decide on Prague.

And while some of us with faster aircraft may not mind remember somewhere like Prague is a somewhat longer trip in a microlight or 172.

Well everyone is welcome to my place at: N44 32 30, W079 07 20, but I know that some people don't have the range for that.

That said, I'm usually in Bremerhaven Germany a few times a year (February next). That airport might tick all the boxes for GA, IFR and small uncertified (I have flown all three from there). Its time is limited, as it is destined to be dug up to allow expansion of wind turbine production, and it's a pretty town, with super museums. Depending upon timing, I can arrange tours of AWI's Polar aircraft, highly modified turbine DC-3's. If you're adventurous, it's the jumping off airport for Helgoland. Just a thought....

It is nice to see how many places offer all those facilities I considered incompatible, and even at quite acceptable rates. Good! We really have the luxury of choice! ("Die Qual der Wahl", for those who think there's no poetry in German)

The argument that Bremerhaven is to sadly close down soon (when, actually, DAR?) weighs heavy for me; all other things equal I would vote for this one. It is a bit out of the way indeed, but no more impossible then Prague, or so. Having a local acquaintance is a serious advantage (though himself might see it otherwise, the morning after...) , and I do like museums, generally. The hop to Heligoland would be for those braver than me, though.

Can't work out if Koblenz has customs... Can only find the VFR plate. Anyone help out there?

Yes, Koblenz has customs. I flew into Koblenz this afternoon, was heading for Dahlemer Binz but it was closed due to snow. The field has some fabulous views, landing fee was €7,00 (PA28) and they have a nice restaurant on site. I've flown to Trier before, if I had to choose, I would definitely select Koblenz. Either way, count me in......

I had a flight in april this year with a Piper Archer with a Dutch registration from Zurich to Koblenz. I arrived and after landing the guy in the tower gave me a hard time and told me I should have called for PNR because I needed customs. I responded to him that Switzerland joined Schengen in 2008 and I didn't need any customs.

On Zurich international airport they didn't give me, so I figured I wouldn't need customs arriving in another Schengen country. He called the customs and said to me I was lucky they didn't make any problems out of it. My last response was that my flight plan was in the system for more than 4 hours before arriving in Koblenz, so the authorities were aware* I was flying that day from Switzerland to Germany. Anyway, he said that you just call for PNR and then if the customs feel like it, they will show up to check you.

  • I know VFR flight plans are not really used for anything in Europe, the are a farce. I've heard a story from a guy working with LVNL (Air Traffic Control the Netherlands) that you don't need to close your flight plan. Because even if you exceed the 30 minutes time after the endurance provided in the flight plan nothing will happen here in Holland. A save thought.

0fficer, when flying between Switzerland and the rest of Schengen, you don't need immigration, but generally do need customs (unless you fall under some sort of exemption, check with the customs).
