Welcome!

ELLX

Hi all,
I"ve started reading this forum a couple of months ago and decided to join today. I’m VFR PPL land and sea, based in Trondheim, Norway. I’ve filled up my profile with relevant information.

Just thought I should pop in and say hello! I just joined the forum and thoroughly like all the advice and insight that’s being spread around here :)

Pretty new at this

All new signups are now asked to select a Country.

Also all new signups are now manually approved, before they can post or send private messages. This is proving very successful in keeping spammers out Normally this happens quickly but it can take a few hours. You get an email when this has been done.

However, if you leave the rest of your profile totally empty, and post a question, the question will likely not have much useful context, so will attract few replies.

Just bumping this thread

It greatly helps the context of a question if people can see roughly where you are, etc.

Some people won’t reply to questions if the poster has a completely empty profile.

Those are valid points and I 1000% agree would you, Silvaire. I too have been the “victim” of various individuals on forums, going back about 14 years. To me, EuroGA is a breath of fresh air compared to some (most) others…

And many people cannot reveal their identity because they e.g. work in some CAA.

However, I am sure most people don’t have a need for a “top” privacy level, and e.g. putting down their country and the type of plane they fly is generally helpful to those reading their posts. For the airport code shown in the avatar, if someone doesn’t want to list their actual base airport they can put e.g. ED— and then it could be anywhere in Germany.

There is a general very good reason for not using one’s surname, which is to prevent google indexing everything you write under your name.

I was once very active on a forum using my real name and holding back little. As you see on virtually any forum, although not on EuroGA of course there are people who are nasty and possibly unstable. On that other forum one of those people decided he or she didn’t like me and spent a year researching and writing letters through the post trying to screw with my life. I didn’t anticipate that issue. Luckily I found people who receive those letters can be fairly easily set straight.

I think whether you choose to identify yourself on a public forum is your choice. There are trade-offs in either direction, and grey areas in between if you ‘partially’ identify yourself to some level at which you feel comfortable. Obviously my initial impulse years ago was to be totally open, and in fact I made close friends that way in places I’d never have made friends otherwise. Good luck with whatever you choose.
