Wasting aircraft range by not having a fuel totaliser

There are also pilots that like to fly with their Partner/GF… who loves to fly and look out of the window because “getting there” is part of the fun of the trip…

Yes; I was being funny… but then you are in the “don’t need a fuel totaliser” category.

That’s fine, but you aren’t making use of your plane’s range.

One could ask why one should have a (typical) 1000 km range in a Diesel engine car. Because on very rare occasions does one drive 1000 km without stop. So for most drivers it’s just nice to not have to refuel every now-and-so-often.

Same is with planes. If you don’t fly long ranges, there’s no need for real precise fuel estimation. It only gets relevant if you want to arrive at a far destination, when making an intermediate stop just puts a lot of hassle on top of the flight. It eats up a lot of time, when in fact you want to arrive. But then few fly so far.

Or already at half the distance when there is no fuel available at your destination.

A quite typical trip from the middle of Germany to one of the North Sea islands might be a good example: The return trip can be at the limit of the range of some SEP (esp. if you fly with more than one adult and therefore you can not depart with full tanks due to weight limitations). There is, however, no possibility to refuel on many of these islands. An additional fuel stop in Leer, etc., however, easily adds almost an hour and therefore more than 20% to the total flight time…
