CRJ-200 down

A postal route aircraft from Oslo to Tromsø went straight down into the mountains last night just across the border in Sweden. The plane was Swedish, with two pilots from Spain and France, both assumed dead.

The video in the link are taken from two F-16 that were on high alert (for military reasons), and were sent to investigate. At the time of the video, you can also see an ambulance helicopter flying.

It seems to have gone straight down from 20k feet, nothing left of the plane.

Bizarre. Be very interesting to hear the CVR and get the FDR info on this. Sounds like structural failure.

Indeed. The airplane is completely pulverized into the crater which is 20m wide and 15 m deep. Even the fuel is in the crater, 100-200 liters of it.

Totally. However, seeing the pics of the crater over at PPrune R&N I have my doubts as to the survival of the recorders.

The Swedish Accident Investigation Authority reports that today the FDR has been recovered. It is in one piece, but heavily damaged and it is too early to tell if any information can be recovered. The CVR has been broken apart. Parts of it has been found, but not yet the memory units.

AVHerald reports that:

On Jan 26th 2016 the SHK reported that the investigation managed to read out both cockpit voice and flight data recorder, the CVR does contain the talks of the crew during the accident flight. The investigation is currently analysing and validating the recordings. A preliminary report is estimated to be released in a week or two.

The SHK (Swedish Accident Investigation Authority) has released a status report. There is only a listing of facts, no analysis and no conclusions. Still, it is pretty clear from the facts what happened and it is deeply disturbing.

The FDR and CVR data were completely recovered and recorded the flight up to the moment of impact.

The event began with an expletive by the captain. Half a second later, the autopilot disconnected. One second before the captain’s expletive some of the FDR channels begun showing data not consistent with other data or the likely actual flight. One of these was the pitch angle channel.

During a period of 25-30 seconds the recorded pitch angle rose steadily from about 0 to 85 degrees nose-up. The SHK has computed the likely actual pitch angle from other FDR channels. During the same period, the computed pitch angle went from 0 to 40 degrees nose-down. The pitch trim was manually set to nose-down, the vertical acceleration was negative during several seconds, peaking at -1g. The indicated speed increased to 500+ knots while the vertical acceleration increased to 3g.

From this information, I can draw no other conclusion than that the Inertial Reference Unit failed, giving incorrect attitude information. The pilots tried to correct for what they believed was an uncontrolled pitch-up but entered a steep dive instead which eventually became a spiral dive.

Two things which I guess the SHK must be considering now.

- The aircraft had two Inertial Reference Units. Normally one gives data to the captain’s PFD, the other to the first officer’s PFD. Did both fail?
- Crew training. There are some similarities to AF447, in that this accident also involved inappropriate crew reaction to instrument failures. Certainly, the loss of attitude data is more serious than the loss of airspeed data (the AF447 case), but there was a standby AI which was independent of the IRUs.

I can add that the other incorrect channels were roll angle, heading and groundspeed — all provided by the IRU.

Would the PFD have not shown an ATTITUDE fail display, and the CAS shown an IRU FAIL or MISCOMPARE signal?

If only one IRU failed, one of the PFDs would still read correctly and the failed PFD could be switched to the good IRU?
