AIR BP fuel app

Hi,

One of the big benefits RR Fuel app will let you have is to order and pay the fuel via a normal credit card before landing. In that way you gain some time while in airport and also you don’t need to pay in cash in some lcoations that have related restrictions.

Doesn’t this need support at the airport end of things?

@Peter

It runs on this programme here: https://www.bptargetneutral.com/uk/

Isn’t that just warm and fuzzy public relations, and a website with lots of green colour?

How does carbon offsetting work?

:) We have a limited-time offer in place whereby Air BP offset the carbon emissions for the fuel component of the trip (we can’t account for the fuel required by trucks, transport to from the airport etc!) on behalf of our customers at no extra charge. For specific details of how this works, I’d need to put you in touch with the Air BP guys themselves. Let me know if you want me to do that – would be my pleasure. Alternatively there’s more information here: https://www.bptargetneutral.com/uk/

One thing I have not understood clearly: If you have a Credit Card (not BP related), can you pre-pay the fuel you know you will need with this card with the app hence avoiding payment/invoicing “delays” on the ramp for cash (change) process or on the spot process of credit card payment etc.?

Absolutely. We allow you to order fuel in advance, with your credit-card, meaning that when you get to the airport you simply fuel and go (and sign the fuel-ticket of course). We receive automatic confirmation of uplift from Air BP, so you’re charged according to how much you actually uplift – naturally there’s always some variation from the expected fuelling amount vs actuals.

To be honest as an end user this is the only operational advantage I see in such an app because otherwise where fuel is available, it IS available without need of “booking”, i.e. you turn up and refuel.

The current functionality is just the start. Even so, it’s a convenient way of ordering fuel that means you’ll be expected on arrival and don’t have to mess about with any paperwork!

We work really closely with Air BP, who in turn work closely with the airports and fuelling agents. We also have a great relationship ourselves with many GA focussed strips. (we’re based at Farnborough airport ourselves, just up the road from Blackbushe)

That’s definitely not our intention. RocketRoute have been specialising in flight planning for GA and biz-av for over 7 years, we put our customers first and always will. We’ve got a jam-packed roadmap full of new features and services, none of which is PR fluff I can assure you!

I guess they could plant some trees on your behalf.

You block the full amount (e.g. 500 liters worth) and only charge what was uplifted (e.g. 450 liters worth) so the difference never leaves my account. Is that right? Any penalties for booking more than I uplift?

That’s right – we block an amount comparable to the maximum capacity of your aircraft, but only charge the amount that you actually uplift. The block doesn’t physically convert into a transaction until the transaction is complete. It’s a bit like when you check into a hotel :) There are no penalties whatsoever for booking more than you need to uplift, nor are there any penalties for cancellation of your fuelling.

Can someone explain why precisely this is useful?

I have an AIR BP card. I land at an airport where the fuel depot takes AIR BP. I get filled up. I pull out the card, give it to the truck driver, he writes out some bit of paper, gets me to sign it, and off he goes.

Some weeks later I get an invoice in the mail (I believe they are trying to just provide them on a website which you have to login into and retrieve them) and the money comes out of my bank.

If the French fuellers are on strike, or the Spanish have run out, or the pump meter is broken so they have to fill 25 litre buckets and pour them in, that won’t change anything.

If I am at a self service place and I cannot work out how the pump works (menus in French or German despite the pump knowing from my card number that they should be in English) I still can’t get fuel, and have to call up ATC to send somebody along, or find a local pilot.

Thank you. I just wanted to be sure (it is the right way to do it but you never know ).

Often that will work out fine, however at times (particularly at smaller airfields) there can be complications with the fuelling, for example unexpected arrivals, or even something as simple as crew shortage. Ordering your fuel in advance is a great way of reducing those ‘what if’ scenarios, so you know the fuel supply will be there on arrival. This is particularly relevant if you have an onwards leg and the weather is turning, for example – or if you have already experienced delays during an earlier leg.

For new customers, the ability to pay directly with a credit / debit-card without needing to become a full BP customer is also a great benefit, particularly for hobbyists who may not fuel regularly – this guarantees you immediate access to a fuel supply.

It’s also worth mentioning that Jet A1 customers will gain preferential pricing vs. the airport posted price, plus the aforementioned carbon offsetting which (at the time of posting!) is taken care of on your behalf, at no extra cost :) Added to this, you get immediate visibility of up-to-the-minute pricing, so you know when you land exactly what you should be paying.

We’re working towards a much more expansive solution than the one you see today, a full range of services to wrap round your trip which we’re really excited about. Watch this space :)
