Jack contacted Savvy for a free preliminary logbook review of both twins. When he tried to obtain scanned maintenance logbooks, he learned that the 1980 Cessna twin had no logbooks prior to 1998. The seller claimed that his “ex-wife tossed them in the fireplace during the divorce.”

The question is inconsistent (it contradicts itself). The probability (rounded) is 33%, but that is not one of the choices.

Let’s refer to the answers abstractly as A, B and C. D is the same answer as A. There are three possible answers, and in the absence of any extra data, we can only give then equiprobability to be correct.

There is a 33% chance that the correct answer is A. Under that assumption, you have a 50% to pick it correctly (by picking A or D). That’s a 16,67% chance to pick to correct one overall.

There is a 33% chance that the correct answer is B. Under that assumption, you have a 25% to pick it correctly. That’s a 8,33% chance to pick to correct one overall.

There is a 33% chance that the correct answer is C. Under that assumption, you have a 25% to pick it correctly. That’s a 8,33% chance to pick to correct one overall.

Summing all possible paths to picking correctly, that is 33,33%.

You can take it the other way if that is more intuitive to you (doesn’t matter mathematically):

(50% chance to pick A or D × 33% chance this is correct) + (25% chance to pick B × 33% chance this is correct) + (25% chance to pick C × 33% chance this is correct)

Sorry for being late, haven’t seen this thread before.

Clearly a pure random pick would result in what you describe, given any one of the answers are correct. There are 4 picks, but only 3 answers (two are the same). Randomly choosing an answer will give you 33.33% chance.

But, there are other possibilities. What if we first eliminate, and then randomly pick? It’s still within the frame of the question, it’s still a random choice (it doesn’t specify the random choice has to be taken between all of them). C cannot possibly be a correct answer, it just doesn’t fit. 60% is 6/10 or 3/5, and we don’t have 5 to chose from. We then have two answers to chose from, and this gives a 50% chance. Therefore, B is the correct answer.
