We have a C172R with a factory-installed KLN89B GPS. Recently it stopped working with the message “Receiver hardware error 8” (or some similar phrasing). Does anyone (Peter?) have access to a MM or IM for that unit that explains the message? There are also some other messages stating that the backup battery is empty. Could it be so simple that the battery is the reason for the “Hardware error 8” message?
We have planned on replacing this unit later this year anyway as part of an 8.33 upgrade of the avionics, so it is not really a big deal, but it would be nice if there was a simple way of making it work until then.

Looks like you need to change the CMOS battery. This may help. It would be daft to buy a new box if the battery is flat.
