One cylinder break in

Hello,

Would you use mineral oil and break in procedures for your own one cylinder only that has been rehoned and reinstalled with new piston rings?
What about the other cylinders then?

Thank you
Tom

Yes; one or more cylinders need the same complete procedure.

It doesn’t do the other cylinders any harm. It just wastes a lot of avgas, flying everywhere at high power.

And in a non-turbo plane you cannot do high altitude flights, say FL100+ because the power setting can’t go high enough. I ignored this in 2008 and paid a price for it; it took ~200hrs for the oil burn to come down afterwards.

I’m in total agreement with Peter.

Ok thank you both of you

The important fact is to fly the first two hours at very high power at fairly low altitude; try full power, full rich at 2 or 3000 ft. If you have an engine analyser with individual CHTs, you will see a sudden drop in CHT of about 30-40°F once the cylinder is ‘seated’, this can happen after 45 minutes or later. After this flight, continue to use 75% power for a couple of hours.

Ok thank you Dirkdj
Unfortunately no engine analyser..

And this is one creative way to break in an engine…

We don’t know what power setting he used Probably a very low one because it is easier to make tight turns. More here.
