High voltage warning

Can any one explain please why the High Voltage Warning light is on when the ALT is off? Does not seem sensible. Circuit breaker popped and will not reset so about to look at reasons.

Was it a high voltage trip ?

The Lamar voltage regulators used a lot in GA have an overvoltage trip, set to something like 36V (on a 24/28V system) and to reset this you need to briefly break the Field CB.

But if the Field CB has always been OFF, I have no idea how this is possible, because with Field=OFF there is no (relevant) power being supplied to the voltage regulator.

If the Field CB pops and, upon trying to reset it, it pops again, that is a really serious fault. A short in the alternator wiring, or an alternator field winding short, or a faulty Field CB.

With the engine not running, reset the Field CB and see that the battery current shows. A normal alternator draws a few amps for the Field. If there is a lot of current drawn and then the Field CB trips, this is applicable:

If you are getting an overvoltage trip and the Field CB trips upon a reset attempt, and assuming there is nobody with electrical expertise around, I would change the alternator.
