New engine for less money than an overhaul

This is an intriguing initiative. It won’t help me, since due to the small number of ST-10 there will never be an STC for my type of aircraft, but I can see that it will be a very attractive offer for owners of “mainstream” aircraft.

$25k is more than an IO360 overhaul, I would think. It is about what one would pay for a standard IO540 overhaul (2 more cylinders).

OTOH you will still have the old engine on which you can get something for the core.

OTOH a new engine is more likely to have latent defects than an overhauled one which you have had for a long time

This link claims a factory overhaul of a 180HP IO-360 is $27k. Zephyr’s base rate is reported as $21k, but that is likely only going to work if the core is immaculate.

Presumably, in europe, you’ll save one way shipping, i.e. $2k.

If it sounds too good to be true, perhaps it actually is?
But weren’t there more Lycosaur-compatibles around, ISTR something Matutaq?
Their best application would be non-certified, I should think, like Annex II.

An io360 overhaul should be around 13.000 -15.000 euro.

It depends what you call an overhaul.
They compare with a 0 Time overhaul, not a top-overhaul.

A top overhaul is not an overhaul. It is a “repair”. Legally it has zero value.

Are there really European companies who do a “proper” IO-360 overhaul (not a top overhaul, as Peter correctly points out) for 13 to 15k Euro?

I had thought prices start well above 20k.

My only experience is an O-360 (not IO) overhaul to zero hours performed in Germany in 1998 on an aeroplane I co-owned then. We paid 36,000DM flat with a well known German overhauler. In Euros that would have been 18,000 – and certainly not less than 25,000 now, fifteen years later.

A forum member whose name shall be hidden is paying 30k€ for a full overhaul of a IO-360 but using overhauled cylinders (new cylinders another 3k€). That’s what you pay nowadays.
