Smartphone based weather radar app?

Actually

Sky-Map and Moving Terrain both use PCmet.de and it is extremely accurate .. up to the point that I used it to find a clear spot for some vfr work while doing my cpl training when it was very bad weather.. It was exactly there. If you do not download the gafordata it is very fast and the presentation is very nice.

check this: http://sky-map.de/ios.html

and how moving terrain does this: http://moving-terrain.de/popup/videosatelliteradar_en.html

and how Avidyne does this:

I am hopefull that the thuraya solution will be fast enough to also download this (which is very lightweight)

Thuraya XT + Hotspot may prove a very nice solution. There will however also be an Iphone sleeve which will come out in Q3 that will also provide GmPrs. (this is not the same one that has already been announced). Also their is an app builder who is working on something super, however it is not up to me to tell anything about it!

Lastly I also spoke to someone who had bought a car GSM booster on Alibaba and had installed a GSM antenna at the bottom of his aircraft. He had excellent reception throughout the whole of france at FL080. I am seeing if I can get a testkit together for this!

Here is a video of the recently certified ADL110 Iridium based weather solution:

You can see how it uses the Iridium SRB data burst service, requiring 3 messages for the RADAR picture and the METAR which is surprisingly efficient. It is connected to a GNS430 from which it receives the flight plan.

Thank you to Peter for directing me to this thread.

I also started with a Thuraya SG2520 phone and implemented a Java Midlet which could load geo referenced radar data right on the SG2520 phone. Unfortunately my personal experiences with the in flight connectivity have been worse than those of others described here. So I turned away from Thuraya and began to experiment with Iridium Short Burst Data.

After many iterations this route led to the ADL110 device referenced by Achim above. Currently PC-Met is the data source as with a quite inexpensive personal account you get access to a nice European radar composite in its raw form. Currently it is updated every 15 minutes with a 2 minute delay. But they are working on a new system generating this data every 5 minutes.

I'm also in contact with the two founders of Topmeteo referenced above and they are thinking about the production of new specialised in flight weather products.

I'm very interested in your feedback and ideas for additional features.

In addition to what has been said there is also the Garmin GSR56 Iridium box. It is similar to the Avidyne MLX770 regarding functionality and pricing but works with the Garmin displays like G500, GTN750.

Also there is (or maybe was) a French company called SatCom system who offered me 2011 a certified Thuraya system apparently working even in fast aircraft like business jets. Unfortunately it was priced at 25.000 Euro.

Little update on this thread! Any new weather apps in the recent years that you guys are using?

The one I use is “Rain Alarm”, it costs 2 GBP or so to remove the ads, and I have found that the precipitation it displays is very accurate. It is a very good app to observe the present precip at ground level. When there are SHRA, it shows you very clearly where the CBs are.

I wish there was something like this but more aviation related: like I can input origin, destination, time of departure and GS and it will draw a line and position of the airplane with predictions along the route.

How much does the App cost?
I dislike links which make you commit yourself to a purchase before they disclose the price.

It’s free with ads or 16,99€/year.

One app I installed recently was the Windy.com one. It works quite well. You do have to pay though; I don’t think it is free. I always pay for apps which are useful, and I bin the rest

It’s completely free but also has a subscription service that give you better resolution and some other stuff. Windy is awesome and the radar feature is very trustworthy.

Unfortunately all these apps work only on ground i.e. within mobile internet reach. Until we get reliable and low cost satellite Internet connection they will remain unusable for in-flight weather. And even then such application would need serious strip off of unnecessary graphic content and compression in transport – something like ADL units already have
