Denmark - 2 radios and 2 altimeters - no more

From here

This result ought to encourage others to do the same in their own country, to stop gold plating. Especially the 2×8.33 business…

In a conversation with the Swedish CAA they told me that they will likewise drop the current Swedish requirement to carry VOR and ADF on all IFR flights as there would no longer be a legal basis.

Yes, this housekeeping is good for clarity and, well, comfort. However, it makes no legal difference. If they tried to fine you because you don’t meet these requirements and you took it to court, they would lose. At least in EU member states. Because EU regulation is in force automatically without implementation and overrides national law. I wouldn’t call this gold plating since they predate Part-NCO.

If they didn’t change it they would be liable for cost associated with installing equipment not needed !

But I wonder who will be liable for the cost of scrambling the fighter jets required to escort all those aircraft with failed single radios on IFR flights? Aircraft radios do fail, old ones and new ones alike, and I have had my share of radio failures. Personally, I would never go flying IFR with a single radio even if it is legal and the cost for the fighters is covered by the taxpayers.

I was amazed when I first came to the UK years ago and saw that every aircraft had two altimeters…even crappy puddle-jumpers.,, Are Europeans comfortable with just one now? Will we see them removed to free up panel space?

It would be nice if they also allowed GPS overlays as in North America.

Squak on the transponder

Or pick up your 8.33mhz handheld transceiver which cost 120 quid of eBay.

Will this apply in the UK ? I’ve just tried to read through schedule 4 and 5 of the ANO and i can’t understand it.

Could any one tell me the minimum equipment to transfer and shoot approaches in class D? Ai

They will scramble the fighters anyway.

You can at least talk to them on 121.5 on your 25kHz COM2 that most aircraft will have. :-)

The clarification that 1 radio is enough to me means that there is no need to rush and install 2 × 8.33 radios. Many aircraft have 1 GNS430 and for example 1 KX155. Now those can replace the KX155 at a convenient time and not do so by 2018.
