He claims it reached 50 metres on first flight attempt, then crashed. That seems unlikely without serious injury. True or made up by journalist??
It’s sad to think that with that amount of effort and money he could have made something fairly nice from plans or a kit.

If the goal is to design and built something, that would be a bit diffciult 
The claimed $10,000 seems grossly exaggerated and even the builder says it is built from “recycled materials”, read : junk.
