Total 20W50 is a licenced version of the Phillips XC product. Same formula. Easier to get in EU.
I’ve also read that Total’s multigrade is re-badged AeroShell… Hard to believe, but whatever, it’s widely available, a lot of folks seem to use it well past TBO, and it is recommended by my most trusted aeroplane maintenance workshop, so that’s good enough for me and my Maule.
What prompted my OP was a licensed helicopter maintenance engineer stating, in writing, that straight oil must be used in a turbocharged HIO-360 for 100 hours after fitting new cylinders – regardless of SI 1014. Shortly afterwards, that engine is making metal.
