Spain October/November 2016 (Burgos LEBG)

I have to go to Vis this weekend. I just returned from Sarajevo today, flying to Bergamo tomorrow, then back to Zagreb on Thursday, Friday Sarajevo again, Saturday to Split and on Tuesday next week back to Zagreb. Unfortunately, I’ll miss this fly-in.

Does Spain get a lot of fog in these situations, in cold temps? The UK does. But I can’t tell what SFC temp it will be down there

Yes, indeed.
It is very usual to have really big extensions of fog when a high pressure situation is present. Sometimes in winter I have flown more than 150nm above a continuous fog layer. Burgos is not in one of the areas specially affected by the fog, but it can also happen easily there. Nevertheless, this next weekend the forecast gives some wind in the area (about 10-15 knots) that can help to avoid this situation.

Great – thanks.

I have booked AirB&B Friday-Monday. It’s not expensive…

The Windyty forecast for Fri-Sun is really light winds

There are not many obvious alternates in case of widespread fog. I would plan LEVD and LESA.

In case of widespread fog covering LEBG, you have a PROB95 for fog also in LEVD and LESA. And probably in LELN too.
LECU could be the option. No IFR approach, but a much higher chance to be free of fog.

No wx data for LECU…

Ah, true. I forgot to tell you the ‘trick’
There is weather (METAR/TAF) for LEVS, which is another ICAO code for the same runway (LEVS is the military airbase north of the runway while LECU is the civil airport, south of the runway)

Thanks

Burgos is at 3000ft elevation so would it be likely to get fog?

Maybe, because it is on the edge of a large flat area

Today seems a good case study

But note the IAP minima of 499ft and 688ft for 04 and 22 respectively. The 900m is fine but BKN002 quite possibly won’t work (though it isn’t a legally limiting factor because the visual point is pilot interpreted).
