Good EIR/CBIR schools for intensive IR?

Hi!

I’m a Norwegian 140 hour PPL pilot of the “no intention of becoming an ATPL” variety. My ambitious new years resolution is to get EIR or CBIR done this year. I’ve been trying to get the TK done here in Norway, but after 3 unanswered emails and 2 fruitless phone conversations I’m giving up on the local (LFS) alternative. For the practical part I’d prefer somewhere where I could travel to for a handful of weeks to do some intensive flying, so it should have good availability of aircraft and instructors.

I see there’s quite a bit of CBIR stuff going on in this forum. If you know of a school (yeah yeah ATO) that provides EIR/CBIR and/or CBIR TK, would you mind listing them in a reply to this post? Maybe with a quick review if you have experience with them as well? Bonus points if they communicate in a professional such as actually answering emails or questions on phone. (=

I have heard good stuff from Iroise Aero formation bases in Brest LFBR. They are flexible, most FIs are airline FOs or Captains. Modern fleet, sim is available. But they do not teach the TK.
They should be open to your needs, and fluent in English.
Check their website

Their former students stories tells you what they can do. I hope Google Translate is good in norwegian :)

Bonus, you will be in a very nice area, where life is cheap and landscapes/beaches are breathtaking. And IMC time is pretty much guaranteed with little risk of icing usually.

LFOU, France

Try Linköping Flying Club (http://www.lfk.se), based at ESSL. I did an IR renewal with them some years ago and they were very friendly and helpful.

ESKC (Uppsala/Sundbro), Sweden

I did mine with RateOneAviation
I highly recommend them.

Historically lots of IR students went to CATS at Cranfield, UK for the theory. CATS seem to have a syllabus approved which involves minimal attendance at the actual school and the rest is done online.

I can’t speak for CATS as I did my exams via an outfit at Bournemouth EGHH (which I can’t really recommend) in 2011 but I have known of many more people go to CATS than anywhere else.

For a PPL/IR you really want to do the absolute minimum for the theory exams, because the syllabus has a high % of material which is irrelevant to actually flying a plane, and nobody will be judging your pass marks at an airline interview.

If you are happy to spend a few weeks somewhere away from home, it’s worth considering some “exotic” options like Egnatia at LGKV, Greece. I’ve been there a few times and it is a highly attractive place to hang out while flying. I could not take the solid time off however.

I am in CATS Aviation, for my CBIR

@fravola it would be great, and help many others, if you could post post something about your experience there.

I guess it’s too early giving an opinion, I have been with them for a month or so
So far it looks nice, they seem very fast answering my emails, but I had just 2 questions.
I decided for them because I heard nice words from a CPL pilot here in LIMP, that did the ground school there, than training in Greece.
I’ll write again after the first stage of ground school.

I could add that I tried to study with aviationexam.com, it is a good way to approach the tests, it helped me, but for sure in CATS they have another way, more professional, they have all the books online and so it’s easy to study once logged in your account

I did this a few years ago when the CBIR just came out. I am also Norwegian, I did theory with Phil Croucher’ school http://www.captonline.com/ , which was one of the first to offer a tailored CBIR course when the new rules came out. Travelled to England to do the required ground school at their office there, but I know Phil also came to Norway on the invitation of Tønsberg flyklubb last year or the year before as they had a group that wanted to do IR. They are an active gang, and you should contact them. https://flyveklubben.no/ir-gruppe/ . I was quite happy with this course as it was made for people like you who only want to do the IR, and not become airline pilots.

Then I went to Jerez in Spain for intensive flying training. http://www.fly-in-spain.com/ I was there twice. I was lucky and had a good instructor, and the school is affordable and the weather is mostly good. That said, the equipment is not the best, and the administration is sort of haphazard. It worked for me, but I am not sure if I would recommend them without hesitation for everybody.

In the end, I did my theory exams at Gatwick with the UK CAA, and my practical exam in Spain, but all paperwork was approved by the Norwegian CAA.
