Fly-in to Mali Losinj LDLO June 2019

I wish you a nice time there! I hope the weather will be in a more acceptable range for your long flight tomorrow @Peter.

EDDS , Germany

It looks fine. Anybody wants to join us for a fish, come along

That salad is a yummy one. Had exactly one of those last year…

Less crowdy than last weekend

LDZA LDVA, Croatia

Due to the bad wx back here and in N Europe, I made it down there a week after everyone else.

Here are a few pics. The regulars will recognise them of course, but the place is as scenic as ever and great value for a visit.

Outbound route flown in black (filed route in magenta). There was a 20 min CTOT due to “flow management”…

Shoreham airport

Initially very good wx over N Europe

Munich EDDM

Over the Alps there was a lot of convective wx; here we are at FL170

With the 50kg weight of the TKS system, getting to FL170 takes longer than it used to…

We had some trouble with the last Munich controller. At FL170 and only just managing to stay there, due to the warm air of -8C and due to avoiding the buildups which meant being mostly in the downdraughts between them, he firmly demanded that we descend to FL160, because “Vienna won’t accept you at FL170”. He pressed harder and harder, while I explained we cannot go lower due to icing conditions below, cannot go higher due to aircraft performance (I explained the bit about ISA plus 11 or whatever; no idea if he understood), cannot go much left or right due to the buildups. He then demanded we turn “north” i.e. to hell with you; go back to where you came from. I refused, saying there is more bad wx behind; he said we came from there so it must be ok! Anyway I just kept saying “unable to comply due to..” and after a while he got the message. Had he tried the “conflicting traffic” stunt I would have told him that all his conflicting traffic can climb at +2000fpm all the way to FL300+ so he needs to do the job he is paid for.

After the handover to Vienna, there was no problem at all! So, an atrocious and completely pointless “performance” by a rogue ATCO. I don’t have the sound track recorded; I rarely record cockpit sound when I have passenger(s). I do have the videos however; not edited them yet.

However the downdraughts got worse and I had to go down 200ft to maintain speed to prevent a stall, to FL168. Vienna was OK but handed us over to Innsbruck which was OK also. Another 200ft down was needed; FL166. Loads of headwind too; 40kt at times. IMC was almost totally avoided however.

But this is not a long flight for the TB20 and here we are, finally over the Alps and with plenty of juice in the tanks; 20 USG LFOB

The ADL150 was useful in terms of indicating no seriously bad stuff in the haze ahead but its radar image showed practically none of these buildups, which I thought was strange. Certainly not ok for navigating them in IMC.

The distinctive Adriatic landscape appears in really thick haze

A bit better lower down

Mali Losinj LDLO

The previous weekend their all time record had been broken, with 68 planes parked! It is hugely obvious that the publicity which EuroGA has brought to these islands since 2012 has really multiplied their traffic. Back in say 2008, almost nobody was going there (even less to Brac which is also very busy now with GA).

Heading for the really nice bar/cafe

They do great fruit salads

This is quite innovative

Time to explore the tunnels properly, all the way to the end (with three light sources). These seem to have been used for servicing torpedoes for Yugoslav torpedo boats or some such

Good sunsets too

A mandatory visit to the Barracuda restaurant, though this time not at the level of the 2014 fly-in which came to €100 per person They still remember our 2014 group

The harbour

A communism-era sculpture, for the ladies here

Huge melons; we pre-packed slices for the return flight but I left them in the fridge!

The herb garden; I always re-stock with a ton of lavender oil

The super scenic coastline walk to Veli Losinj

and another sunset

Time to fly back. The wx looked a whole lot better this time

The airport cat

Nice conditions locally

We got a 22min CTOT (ATC industrial action in Switzerland) but there was nobody in the tower so this wasn’t much of a problem You call up Pula once airborne

The little grass strip called Unije

Pula LDPL

Approaching the Italian border (ROTAR) and LFOB showing 23 USG; almost no wind

Venice Lido

Venice itself

The foothills of the Alps

I always run this special topographic presentation when crossing the Alps, so in the event of an engine failure one can immediately head for a suitable canyon

There were more freshly formed buildups and their tops were rising as fast as we could climb but eventually we “got them” at FL170

Near the end of the Alps; some great scenery here

Looking back

Most of N France looks like this – hours of it

Finally, the cliffs around Seaford

Return route in black (filed route in magenta)

The two Autorouter gramets were largely fiction, especially in terms of showing cloud… as usual
