A little IFR trip Shoreham EGKA to Coventry EGBE

Due to lots of Class G, one would tend not to do such a flight (GC distance 102nm) using high altitude IFR, but in the winter, and when there is low cloud about, one can easily end up in icing conditions enroute while being squeezed below the Class A bases.

Here is the filed route

As usual, this is not flown due to the proximity of Gatwick and Heathrow and one can expect a DCT to Goodwood (GWC) to keep out of the jet traffic while climbing.

There was a suprising and worrying (given the OAT of +5C) rain shower as I was getting into the plane, with absolutely nothing showing up on radar, but it passed quickly.

Some cloud around, to keep away from

which was soon outclimbed and here we are at FL100

I have TCAS set up to show traffic +/-2900ft but rarely saw anything of the jet traffic in/out of the two big airports.

Then it thinned out a bit

I got a DCT to CPT

The famous landmarks, from FL100, zoomed and cropped

A quick and dirty video – should have replaced the sound track

Time to descend soon… but they kept me at FL100 until Birminhgam

Then I got some wiggles in the -1000fpm descent. Here we are on the ILS

Not easy to get rid of reflections when there is no time…

I collected the magical water repellent stuff from mdoerr for later tests…

This is the departure

Just before an early descent, around CPT, to 5000ft initially, under Farnborough 134.125 (that was unusual – I didn’t previously see Farnborough do much in Class A)

Actual route flown

Enroute OAT was -8C. Airborne time about 50-55mins.

Nice trip and nice photos. What time did you do the flight? I flew from Panshanger down to Bournemouth yesterday on part of your route near Wodley NDB. I was just in the 2000 – 3000 ft altitude range so I don’t think I would have seen you 7000ft above me . It was very bumpy at low altitudes yesterday. I did 3 circuits before I left and it was lively all the way round.

Deps were 0915 and 1200.

That is the other advantage of high up: smooth flight.

I narrowly missed you yesterday in Coventry… we arrived around eleven and departed in the early evening, but were parked on the other side of the airport. The weather was extremely nice for England this time of the year! Below is a photo (iPhone) of London from the return flight (approx. FL 250 climbing to 410) with very few clouds:

EDDS - Stuttgart

Just a little update on the wx for that trip:

GRAMET:

As usual, the GRAMET totally fails to forecast relatively thin stratus cloud, and low level cloud generally.

Peter is that a mobile Gramet site or the normal one?

EGTK Oxford

The normal one, accessed via a private gateway. Same presentation.

OK.I don’t see the input fields at the top.

Peter, what’s that home-made looking black box with the toggle switch at the bottom of your panel?

YPJT, United Arab Emirates

It’s a thingy I built when I was renting, 2000-2002. It is a ~45 min timer which flashes the lamp after 45 mins, then you press Reset and you get another 45 mins. I built it so I could switch tanks when all the electrics failed. Never used it in the TB20, of course.
