Trip around Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Austria

I flew to Sibiu last year.

80 Euros for landing and two days parking
Avgas expensive (2,90€)
Paying for fuel took an eternity
Airport is mostly dead, except a couple of airline movements a day
Cheap rental cars
Sibiu is a nice city, albeit partly in poor shape

Re touring the countryside, don’t underestimate distances. Consider that the road infrartructure is poor. We did tour for a few hours, but really didn’t get nowhere.

All in all nice, but not a highlight, particularly when considering that it’s quite a long flight from central Europe.

For SE Romania and Black Sea there is Tuzla LRTZ near the big city Constanta and several sea resorts, they have no fuel but there is Tulcea LRTC not far away with Avgas, at the Danube Delta entrance. I would rather spend a day here visiting DD rather than on the boring and kitschy resort beaches – or maybe do both.

Coming back to an old report as I’m planning a trip to Romania & Bulgaria this summer. Had planned to fly from Targu Mures LRTM to Bucharest LRBS and then into Bulgaria via Gorna Oryahovitsa LBGO (customs obliges), but LRBS just issued a NOTAM indicating no Avgas effective immediately until September. We have a group of antique aircraft with limited range and are now scrambling to find a plan B.

Are you aware of any other airfields in southern Romania (between LRTM and LBGO) that have Avgas?

We’ll likely head from LRTM to the Danube Delta instead since LRTC has Avgas and apparently also has customs with 48hr notice for flying south along the coast into Bulgaria. We would have preferred to avoid the high-fee Franport airports in Bulgaria for customs (Varna & Burgas).

Any suggestions for overnight stops and sightseeing (on the ground) in the DD? Flying over it will clearly be a big hit.

I can recommend LRTZ (Tuzla) in Romania. It’s a grass strip, but it’s very close to the Bulgarian border, they have AVGAS, it’s by the sea with lots of things to do in the area. Usually they won’t charge you and they have a nice ‘Hangar Cafe’ restaurant.

However, before flying to Bulgaria you should make a short stop at LRCK (Constanța) international airport for departure customs formalities.

That’s some food for thought, Alex. Thanks.

Do you have any idea of the fees at LRTC (Tulcea) and LRCK (Constanta), in particular for aircraft less than 1200kg?

Take care about AVGAS, recent news: in Romanian.
Translated in short, there is a shortage in AVGAS provisioning in Romania these days, do spot phone checks with your targets airports.

For technical reasons i am still in Nis, but email quote for LRTC (which i intended to fly to yesterday) 16eur + vat.

If you need a good amount of fuel, Belgrade and Nis are an interesting detour. International flights pay about 1,30eur/L.

(Just dont have a tire problem in Nis :-( )

Plan to fly Sofia, Nis, Osijek on the way home. Wanted to stay overnight in Belgrade, but they wanted nothing to do with 14 little antique aircraft (very very busy in summer they said and no room or time for us). Unfortunately Serbia has no customs airfields north of Belgrade. Still looking for a route from Szeged to Primorsko with max 150-180nm legs (PA18, 80kt cruise).

4 NM (yes really) north of LYBE you have a friendly airclub with a golf-green standard grass runway (Zemun Polje 13 May) you can fly there from Nis and quickly passport stop and tank next morning in LYBE on the way out ;-)
I did when LYBE wouldnt let me stay overnight due to limited space ;-)
2-4min flight depending on circuit.

Many thanks for the excellent suggestion. It would be a very friendly option for a couple aircraft. In this case, Belgrade LYBE indicated that they were unable to provide handling for 14 aircraft, which I interpret to mean refuelling and customs since they mentioned separately that they didn’t have parking space.

Yes, LYBE is getting more and more restrictive for a GA. It’s a very busy place.

Not only parking is a problem (which it isn’t space-wise, but we all know that), but handling a big bunch of crews and escorting them to customs would be a challenge for them during certain times of the day.

What they would need is a dedicated GAT (ideally next to the GA parking) with dedicated handling staff and refuellers. But then, you would have to say goodbye to those 30€ landing fees.

Also, they only have that one runway…
Recently, I was number 6 to land…

Serbia could use more international airports with Avgas. But customers would be rare…
