Fly to ski

I have been frozen to the bone on Timmelsjoch in September, on a motorcycle Rain, turning to snow at the top, with the route taken because of a stubborn insistence on avoiding the Brenner.

Funny that that route is offered by a website which specialises in airport to ski transport options

The whole business of ski transfers can be a bloody nightmare. I have just booked Innsbruck to Obergurgl for €330 (for two) and that is the cheapest option. One could do it for a lot less but then would be hauling the luggage on and off trains and buses, and other packages run to nearly €1000. I don’t know whether people just grit their teeth and pay this (because the whole Alpine ski scene is a ripoff and that’s without going to say Zermatt ) or whether this sort of thing affects which destinations do or don’t get crowded. One of the worst was Wengen (4+hrs on 3 or 4 trains) and the best was Madonna with a €35/person FlySkiShuttle thing from Verona, but FSS is banned from picking people up enroute (at say Trento, which they pass through) due to, I was told, Trento taxi mafia cartels

Is there any interest in a fly to ski just before EDNY? It would be obviously efficient to combine the two. There is still plenty of snow in early April in the right places.

Use the highest resort you can find. Unless it has been snowing extensively before.

Almost a year later… is anyone interested is doing a fly-in to a ski location?

About a month before the ski lifts open, there is already a ton of snow in some places. Madonna has loads already – at least 1m – and 2-3m forecast in the coming week.

What about my homebase? Only 20-30 minutes away from one of the most famous German ski resorts called Winterberg. Just kidding… If the fly-in would be in the Alps during february or march, I’m definitely interested. It would be nice to do it on an aerodrome, which is really near the skilifts and/or slopes, but still accessible for non-site rated pilots.

Winterberg needs good snow at low altitude. I have looked at it a number of times and each time it wasn’t any good. But it is a lot cheaper than the Alps… but then so are many places, especially ones which are full of small kids.

Madonna has so much snow they are opening on November 16 and 17 and on November 23 and 24, 2019: skiers can ski in the Grostè area with special lift pass prices for the weekend opening. The snow is coming down so thick that the webcams were useless until just now

It is really tempting to just pop down there now (Bolzano, or Trento if you are intra-schengen).

Winterberg has te best snowmaking engines you could ever imagine. It has been massively improved the last 5 years. December and the beginning of january are still a bit difficult though, so I would never consider Christmastime, but February and March are now more ore less snowsecure. However, the slopes in this area are (very) short, you simply cannot compare it with skiing in the Alps. It’s just fun for some days off or during evenings after work. Nonetheless, feel free to give me a notice when you come over here.
