Landing strip Elgå on the ice of Lake Femunden, Norway

Hi,

For those interested in a little winter adventure, this might be the right place to go these days:

http://www.femundfjellstue.no/N/Flyplass%20Elga.html

There is a little landing strip on the ice of lake Femunden in Norway. The owners of the Fjellstue Hotel make this landing strip every winter and are very happy to welcome visitors. The Hotel is cozy and the food is very good. Tone and Rolf are very interesting people and it is a pleasure to spend time with them. And the landscape is great, too. It is possible to go skiing or hiking, and watch the abundant wildlife.
Flying there is an adventure in itself. Have a good idea about winter operation including ice and snow removal, if you stay over night! They have a generator that you can use for electricity, but bring an electric heater to get the engine to operating temperature…
The strip is supposed to open up tomorrow, but call them in advance.

If you have questions, feel free to write me.

Amazing that an ice runway is authorized on this side of the pond !! Like Alton Bay, NH !
Now we know there is one.

For anyone unfamiliar (like me), here is a rough map

I hope you will have a lot of visits, GA seems pretty active in Norway.

It doesn’t have to be authorised….

ESKC (Uppsala/Sundbro), Sweden

It doesn’t have to be authorised….

Except, of course, on the Lac Noir in regulation-hungry Switzerland.

There’s even a video of last year’s event in which some spoil-sport says not to use brakes, for fear of experiencing the harmless pleasure of putting a tail-dragger sideways on an ice-covered runway.

As in most branches of aviation, the Americans know how to have fun on frozen lakes.

In fact, there are several of these Ice runways in Norway and Sweden. Some just for a single event, others for the winter season.
Nice excuse to make a trip in wintertime and meet other aviation enthusiasts.
Forecasts look quite good for Norway in the next week.

Wonderful photos – just added from CW.

Weather will be very nice until friday. This morning we have -25 degrees and no wind.

Unfortunately Sweden is covered in the worst blizzard in many many years…
