Hi,
The first 2 weeks of september I would like to do a flying vacation to Tuscany in our WT9 Dynamic ultralight. I have a few questions since I never flew in Italy or visited this area before.
The rough planning I had in mind :
Day 1: Fly from Belgium to Annecy.
Day 2: Cross the Alps from Annecy to Tuscany in the early morning to avoid turbulence etc since I’m not a mountain flying specialist.
Day 3-5: Rent a house / appartement or just stay in a hotel in Tuscany near to an airfield, rent a car and discover the Region.
Day 5-6: Visit Elba, rent a scooter to discover the island.
Day 7: Visit Calvi (I have been here before)
…
Day 8 or 9 or 10… :) : Return to Belgium
Questions:
- What is the best way to cross the Alps from Annecy to Italy.
- I came accross this awesome website: http://fliegen-in-italien.de/flugziele.html and it lists some great avioresorts etc but the problem is I would like to rent a car to go discover Tuscany for a few days and this seems hard to find as most of the smaller airfield don’t have these possibilities. What would you recommend?
- Do you have tips for hotels, appartements or hotels in Annecy, Tuscany, Elba, Calvi, let me know!
- When we return from the south to Belgium, we would like to meet up with some friends coming from Belgium and rent a house with a pool near an airfield in the Lyon area, does anybody know a place like this?
- Any other tips :) ?
A lot of questions, I know :)
I hope somebody can help
Jens

A few years ago we stayed at this place and they did also provide a rental car for us:

I haven’t flown this route yet, but I would consider following the published GAFOR-route from Geneva to Lugano. The reference altitude for that route is 6800ft AMSL; so you could do the crossing at i.e. 8800ft ASML (depending on weather and your preferences of course).
Here are some information which could be of help:

(GAFOR-routes on pg. 34/35.)

I’ve flown that route 3 times, without O2. One 1 occasion though, after Sion, (gafor orange), I had to cicle up (there was a really big hole above us, in a wide part of the valley), as I didn’t want to go through what looked like <1000 ft from max elevation.
The route is easy to fly, moving map is important.
Remember to NOT fly in the middle of the valleys, as this will give you much less space for a turnaround should you need to. You can fly a couple wingspans from the terrain. Usually you’ll want to keep to the right.
I never get bored of it and find it some of the nicest flying one can do.
Tuscany is pretty big :-) I would plan for the route you have found but would keep the option of having an extra stop, in let’s say Cannes LFMD which leaves you the option to follow the coast via Genoa in case the weather gets sketchy. It get’s ketchy a lot in summer. Check the weather on any given day if there are TS to be expected you will get them over that part of the Alps… (attached is now)

Good to know, I’ll contact them to see if this is still possible.

Thanks for the tip, I’ll check it out.
I was thinking about the following route, Annecy – Albertville – Saint Remy De Maurienne (LFKR) – Sollieres Sardieres (LFKD) – Italy
Any thoughts on this?

I know the weather can be difficult during summer, that’s why I plan to leave early in the morning.
But indeed my backup plan would be to fly via the coastline. Unfortunately it’s not allowed to land at LFMD with an Ultralight :(
Are there any other good airports in the area?
Cuers would be a good option

Indeed this looks like a good option for refueling, in the past I have been to Le Castellet which was also a great stop.
